I randomly came up with this idea during the last week of school. One of my reading groups had finished their book and project before any of the other groups had finished. Instead of giving them a new book (there was only one week left), I quickly created this template and told them to pick an event in history and research it. I had one boy choose the Vikings, someone else chose the atomic bomb, a girl wanted the great depression, and another student picked the Korean war. I loved that everyone had such diverse topics. After they got started, I saw some great learning take place in my classroom! Because it's an inquiry-based activity, they generated their own questions. And because they got to choose their own topic, they were excited and felt ownership over the project. I plan on using this next year as a fun fast finisher activity. This list is something I quickly generated. {I know it is not all inclusive - if I left something off that you really want me to add on, please leave me a comment.} This would be fun to hang up somewhere in the back of the classroom so fast finishers can work on a project whenever they want. These pages can be used as interactive notebook pages or simply as stand-alone, ready to use student activity pages to make research of a country or city a bit more fun! My “Less Mess” Interactive Notebook Activities allow for two simple steps: cut around the border and glue it in. That’s it! They are perfect for teachers who may have their students for just one short period per day. However, if you are a big fan of the “folds and flaps” that usually come with interactive notebooks, this resource can be a nice supplement to add to what you already have or to use on days when you may have less time. The pages are designed so that they will work in spiral notebooks, composition books, three hole binders, or as individual activity pages if you are not yet fully ready to commit to interactive notebooks in your classroom. ★ PLEASE NOTE that this resource is included in my "Less Mess" Map Skills and Geography Interactive Notebook Activities and my "Less Mess" Social Studies, Map Skills & Geography Interactive Notebook Activities Bundle as well. Give your students an opportunity to “explore” cities or countries that fascinate them. These activities could be done in two different ways. You could have the students write about the city or country first on the Dream Travel page (to see what they already know) and then do some research to complete the country (or city) page. Two versions of the writing page are included with different line spacing to better meet your students’ needs. Alternately, you could have them do a little research first on the country or city page and then write about their dream travels (incorporating what they learned from their research). If you’d like them to get create with their research, have them write fictional narratives (My Trip page) about their travels using details learned in their research The research page makes a colorful page to include on a bulletin board display when completed. ★ You may also want to check out my full line of "Less Mess" Interactive Notebook Activities!
Converting metric measurements has always made me to stop and think. A centimeter is 10 times larger than a millimeter, but to convert from centimeter to millimeter we divide by multiply by 10. This has always send my brain on a bit of a loop de loop. I wanted to make a set of posters that not only showed the conversions, but also showed a size comparison. This way, it may spark a conversation about conversions versus size. "A kilometer divided by 1000 is a meter, but we multiply kilometers by 1000 to convert to meters. 8km = 8000m." You can grab the set of posters free here in my Google Drive. A quick note about the arrows, because I've gotten some feedback... The top arrow compares size, the bottom is conversion. I'll use the below poster as an example: "Millimeter x 10 = centimeter, but to convert from mm to cm, we divide by 10." I also got a couple tips from teachers for teaching metric conversions: "Horse to Fly, Multiply Fly to Horse, Divide, of course!" - Ms. McElroy "If you increase the unit, you decrease the amount (and vice versa) - I usually tell the students that they need to run less often if they use a bigger bucket to move water from one place to another - bigger bucket = less trips/smaller bucket = more trips seems a lot more comprehensible." - Ms. Baier Metric activities: Metric Conversions Digital Math Escape Room Metric an Customary Conversions Math Pennant Activity
We are working on the locations that make NM interesting and unique. After reading and researching points of interest, including state and national parks and monuments, the students had to choose a required number of each to write about. A script was provided for developing writers, but strong writers were encouraged to use stronger voice in their writings. No matter which writing style they chose, the same content was required: What is the place called? Where is it located in the state? What is one interesting fact about it? What is something you might learn about it or the state if you visit it? The brochure was created using am 11” x 18” piece of construction paper that was accordion folded. The cover had to feature an image of NM and the state name. The 4 inside panels focused on specific types of parks , monuments, or events/attractions. The back panel showcased our state’s symbols.
