Energy humanities is a field of scholarship that, like medical and digital humanities before it, aims to overcome traditional boundaries between the disciplines and between academic and applied research. Responding to growing public concern about anthropogenic climate change and the unsustainability of the fuels we use to power our modern society, energy humanists highlight the essential contribution that humanistic insights and methods can make to areas of analysis once thought best left to the natural sciences. In this groundbreaking anthology, Imre Szeman and Dominic Boyer have brought together a carefully curated selection of the best and most influential work in energy humanities. In just the past decade, the humanities have witnessed a remarkable efflorescence of research that is beginning to receive recognition by scientists, government officials, and industry. Arguing that today's energy and environmental dilemmas are fundamentally problems of ethics, habits, imagination, values, institutions, belief, and power¿all traditional areas of expertise of the humanities and humanistic social sciences¿the essays featured here demonstrate the scale and complexity of the issues the world faces. They also offer compelling possibilities for finding our way beyond our current energy dependencies toward a sustainable future. Staying true to the diverse work that makes up this emergent field, selections range from anthropology and geography to philosophy, history, and cultural studies to recent energy-focused interventions in art and literature. Energy Humanities will appeal to scholars and students across the disciplines, especially those concerned with environmental issues and social justice, as well as anyone concerned with our shared planet and the challenges of political, social, and environmental change. Contributors include: Margaret Atwood, Paolo Bacigalupi, Lesley Battler, Ursula Biemann, Dominic Boyer, Italo Calvino, Warren Cariou, Dipesh Chakrabarty, Una Chaudhuri, Claire Colebrook, Stephen Collis, Erik M. Designed by Shore Tilbe Irwin + Partners, now Shore Tilbe Perkins + Will, Engineering V is a major addition to the University of Waterloo's campus, adding headquarters for two more departments (mechanical and mechatronics, and systems design engineering) and providing a striking new gateway from the East of the campus. The building also provides design and construction space for student design teams, including an area to showcase projects such as the solar and hydrogen cars from previous competitions. Located in a two storey space with multiple project bays, student teams finally get a proper home, and the building puts their work at the base of the building's atrium where other students, faculty and visitors can see them and be inspired. The building also includes an interior garden, a sedum and stone roof, and features a striking pattern of fritted glass on a curtain wall that incorporates sleek operable vents. An elevated pathway also connects the building across a circulation road to the rest of the engineering complex on the main campus.
