“Living in City and Country” by W.R. McConnell. Published by Rand McNally and Co., 1937. Most illustrations by Herbert Rudeen. Many photographs by various. Intended to be an introduction of geography to third grade readers. Pictures intended to be as much a part of the lessons as the text. Okay, I am going to reveal my age and just how hill-billy I was as a child. I remember coming to Tulsa to visit relatives, and going to my first ever department store. My little sister and I were thrilled with the escalators, and our mother and her friend could shop freely and all they wanted, because my sister and I spent the whole time giggling and riding up and down the escalators. That memory still pops into my head on occasion when I step onto one. However, although we had "cross-road" shops around us and we sometimes stopped at one when traveling, we would have been classed among the "town people" and we shopped regularly at modern (post 1930s) grocery store chains.
Consider this your stairway to heaven.
