Last chance to see: "Edokomachi" (http://edokomachi.co.jp/) one of the latecomers to Asakusa' kimono market but with a fresh outlook on the classic Japanese garment is closing its "Retrokan" store in Kappabashi Hondori -this is a great chance to get all kinds of beautiful kimono and accessories in really low prices. Sad as the occasion might be, the company has several other stores, two of them also in Asakusa. #Edokomachi, #kimono, #Kappabashi January 31, 2015 © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
Asakusa Sanja Matsuri 3rd day 9/22 Some Asakusans keep their cool (and their distance) from the Ninomiya omikoshi: not everyone wants to actually carry it -seeing it from afar is good enough! #Asakusa, #Sanja, #Matsuri, #omikoshi, #Kaminarimon, #Ninomiya Taken on May 18, 2014. © Grigoris A. Mochitsuki in Asakusa/Yoshiwara 4/4 The day was quite cold and the Yoshiwara Jinja shrine didn't offer any heating so the situation called for some improvisation! #Asakusa, #Yoshiwara, #mochitsuki, December 7, 2014 © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
A throwback to the Edo times in Asakusa's Rokku/sixth quarter: a public-use barrel for collecting rainwater and buckets (called "tensuioke" or "yousuioke") with the inscription "hinoyoujin" (look out for fires). Fires and fights were the "flowers of Edo" and although not functional anymore, this is a good reminder of a past and present danger. Taken on April 8, 2014. © Grigoris A. Miliaresis

Still from the menu of the "Monblan" burger house (http://www.monburan.co.jp/) on Asakusa's Kaminarimon Dori/Street: Atsuko's wafu steak-don: "don" means served on a bed of rice and "wafu" or "Japanese style" means accompanied by soya-based sauce and sprinkled with nori seaweed. De-li-ci-ous! Taken on March 8, 2014. © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
Asakusa Nakamise, New Year Decorations 12/14...a gohei stick decorated with Shinto's "shide" strips of paper that ward away evil spirits and the hat of Ayatsuri Sanbaso, the lead in the Kabuki dance of the same name and symbol of a plentiful harvest... #Asakusa, #Nakamise December 10, 2015 © Grigoris A. Asakusa Sanja Matsuri 6/28 Another hard part is "parking" it at various points so that the people carrying it can rest. One of the association people climbs up a scaffold and the omikoshi must stop precisely at the point he signals with his clappers -if they can't do it they have to move back and try again! #Asakusa, #Sanja, #Matsuri, #omikoshi Taken on May 17, 2014. © Grigoris A. Asakusa Yoshiwara Niwaka 2/11 Then, we followed around the "Seppuku Pistols" (http://seppukupistols.soregashi.com/) a punk group with a unique take on street music and dancing! #Asakusa, #Yoshiwara, #Niwaka, #Seppuku, #Pistols Taken on August 3, 2014 © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
One more beautiful sento (public bath) in Asakusa: "Tsuru no Yu" up on the fifth district, far from the neighborhood's bustling center but a staple among locals. #Asakusa, #sento, #Tsuru July 4, 2015 © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
We had to cross the Sumida River to take the picture but the sign is visible from Asakusa: a laser marquee on the Asahi Beer "Golden Flame" building counting down the days to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Tokyo doesn't really have a landmark so Asakusa is its landmark! #Asakusa, #sumida, #Asahi, #Olympics, #2020 November 21, 2015 © Grigoris A. Miliaresis
One way the kanzashi pins can be used; there are many more and the girls at "Wargo Kanzashiya" in Asakusa's Shin-Nakamise Dori will gladly offer suggestions -if you'd orefer to study alone, the company has quite a few relevant videos on its website (http://www.wargo.jp/user_data/kanzashi_howto.php) #Asakusa, #Wargo, #Kanzashi 3/3 March, 1 2015 © Grigoris A.
