Do you remember my last post about the hoodie scarves?... I told you that Kass and I made something to go with them and I am finally getting around to showing them to you now:) We made some handwarmers to go in the pockets at the end of the scarves! Here in Utah the winters are long and cold...so handwarmers are a winter staple at our house. I usually make a bunch this time of year and keep them in a big bowl in my pantry where they are handy and close to the microwave for a quick heat up on a cold day. The nice thing about these hand warmers is that they work for cold packs too if you put them in the freezer first.... headaches and owies are quickly soothed by using one or two of these little cuties! So here is how I make them. I like to use 5" x 5" squares...I'm sure you all have a few of those laying around so that you can play along... right? I use 2 different squares of Sew Cherry for each bag... one for the front... and one for the back. I also like to line them with flannel. It helps to keep the heat/cold in longer. I cut two 5" x 5" squares of flannel for each bag. I placed a piece of flannel on the wrong side of each square... And I placed 2 squares with right sides together. Then I stacked them all up in a pile for sewing! I used a 3/8" seam allowance and stitched all the way around the edges... leaving an opening for turning and filling later. I backstitched where I stopped and started sewing. I also used my walking foot because there are 4 layers and it really keeps them from shifting. Before turning... I clipped off the corners for less bulk. I turned and used a crochet hook to get a nice point in the corners. (my favorite turning tool) I used a funnel... and filled each bag with about 3/4 of a cup of rice. I stitched the opening closed using my machine:) I stitched them up in matching pairs... one for each pocket! Each set takes about 30-45 seconds on high to heat up in my microwave. And there you have it...fast,easy and cute little square hot/cold bags... what else could you ask for? Okay...maybe longer and larger hot/cold bags for your feet and neck? You got it! I made a few of those too! I made them the exact same way ... I used Daisy Cottage fat quarters for these bags and I cut 2 different pieces of fabric 6" x 20"... again... one for the front and one for the back. I also cut two pieces of flannel for each bag the same size. I stitched them up and turned them... Filled them up with about 6 cups of rice for each bag... which is about halfway full. I stitched them closed...and laid them out to show you! These take about 2 minutes on high because they are quite a bit larger. I like to put one at the bottom of my bed so that my sheets are nice and toasty for my feet when I climb into bed on a cold winters night! They also work nicely for a neck, shoulder or backache after a long quilty day! And they also work in the freezer too! After I have been out working in the garden on a hot summer day...it feels heavenly to lay one across my shoulders and neck to cool me down a bit...try it and see if it works for you too! Until tomorrow... have a quilty kind of day my friends:) xx Lori

Love is in the air and it's time to create a Valentine's Day display for the library. Last year I made a "Blind Date With a Book" display (all our displays stay up for a two week period). I found many ideas on Pinterest and from other library blogs. Here are a few that I used to gain inspiration: http://littlethoughtsaboutbooks.blogspot.com/2012/02/blind-date-with-book.html http://storytimewithmissmollie.blogspot.com/2012/06/display-blind-date-with-book.html I will be repeating the display again this year, and I will provide images/details in a few weeks. To begin my display I choose approx. thirty four books. Our display shelf holds approx. twenty six books, but I was hopeful that the students would check out several books and we would need to be prepared to replenish the display frequently. I kept track of the books I chose using an excel spreadsheet. (I wanted to be sure that I did not use the same books when I repeated the display in the years to come). I also used the spreadsheet to number the books, list the barcode for each book and to add notes about what genre/topics the books represented. With the help of our parent volunteers, we pulled all the books for the display. I then created "Rate your date" slips to put inside each book. The students would rate the book and then turn in the slip for a raffle at the end of the two week period. We then wrapped each book using different types of wrapping paper. To keep track of which book was which after it was wrapped we used the spreadsheet. Since each book was already numbered on the spreadsheet we decided to draw a large number on each book after it was wrapped instead of placing a temporary barcode on the book (as others have chosen to do). When the students checked out a book they would not be able to use the self checkout computer, instead we made a sign out sheet that they could write their name and the number that was on the book. I saw many ideas on Pinterest to entice students to pick a book. Some wrote summaries of the book or gave hints on the topic/genre. We decided to use both "genre" hints as well as "similar" books. For example: if the book was about vampires we wrote "for Twilight lovers" on the tag. I then created signs using Photoshop (signage ideas came from Pinterest and other library blogs). One sign explained the Blind Date process, one assured students that they could check out the books (I highly recommend having one of these) and one just because: Once all of that was done it was now time for the fun part of decorating the display shelves. I found a tutorial on Pinterest teaching me how to make the heart chains that I used on the shelves as added decor. Here is the link to Strumpet's Crumpets: http://strumpetscrumpets.blogspot.be/2012/01/valentine-paper-heart-chain-diy.html I added the heart chains to the shelves and I also cut out paper hearts in different shades of pink and red. I folded the hearts in half and taped one side down on the outside edge of the shelves. It made the hearts really pop out and look great. Overall the display was a huge success and we had many students checking out books. The raffle was held at the end of the two weeks and one student won a box of See's candy. I can't wait to see how this years display turns out! Please feel free to use any of the signage/slips!

Photo Source: pinterest.com | Shawna Watkins The countdown to Valentine's Day has begun and if you work at a faith-based school or are involved with the children's ministry at your church, here's a fantastic scripture inspired bulletin board from Shawna Watkins over at Pinterest that staff and students alike will appreciate! It takes a lot of letters, but the meaning makes it well worth it! John 3:16 Valentine's Day Bulletin Board The bulletin board simply consists of the Bible verse, John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son so that whoever believes in Him shall have everlasting life." However, the cool part is that the letters are arranged in such a way that the word "Valentine" can be highlighted and the meaning of the verse tied into the holiday! We like how the original creator used a combination of black and red letters to create a stark contrast and added doily hearts around the verse to provide more visual interest. We might, however, suggest a more vibrant background color be used to liven up the display! [NOTE: We might even suggest doing a black background, then use white and red letters for a bright contrast!] Thanks so much for stopping by! We always love hearing from you so be sure to check out the comment section below or catch up with us on Facebook!
Piratecore is an aesthetic based around the themes of pirates, a person who attacks and robs ships at sea. It usually involves boats, the sea, and treasure rather than actual crime. It draws its inspiration from aesthetics such as Adventurecore and Crowcore, and may include things such as: collecting shells/rocks/trinkets/bones/etc, studying maps and constellations, sea travel, and sketching. Some may even take pride in their weaponry, mainly consisting of swords and daggers. People valuing Pira

I started a few heart-themed activities with my students yesterday. We're making a bulletin board display titled "We Heart Books". I'll share pictures of the completed bulletin board tomorrow, as a nasty little stomach bug kept me from school today. And before you feel sorry for me for missing Valetine's Day at school, I was quite okay with it -hormone crazy twelve year-olds on sugar highs isn't exactly my idea of fun. ;) Anyhow, we started off on Monday morning with some fun "heart art". We talked about monochromatic colours and lines, and I showed them how a curve in the line can make an optical illusion. It was an easy and inexpensive art activity - all they needed was a ruler and a few markers or pencil crayons. I also had the students create "heart art" in language. I had the students write about their favourite books they had read this year. I gave them a list of prompts (I'll upload the assignment sheet when I post pics of the bulletin board - it's at school, too), and had them write their answer on a site I found through Pinterest - Festisite. This site created cute little hearts from their writing - which look great posted beside the line heart art. And, because it's Valentine's Day, I thought I'd share a little bit about my Valentine. I'm linking up to Buzzing with Ms. B for her "How I Met My Hunny" linky party. I met my husband when I was in grade 12 and he was in grade 13 (yes, we used to have 5 years of high school in Ontario). Although we went to the same high school, I somehow didn't meet him until we were both on a bus going to a ski trip in Quebec. It was VERY late at night (or VERY early in the morning) when we were first introduced, so I don't think we exchanged many words beside "hi" (although I do remember I thought he had beautiful eyes). To sum up our 20 year history in a short little paragraph, we were together by the end of the trip, and have been together ever since. We ended up going to the same university, moved back home together, found jobs, got married, and had three beautiful little girls. It may not be the most exciting of stories, but it's our story ... and I think it's perfect. :) This was us just after we graduated high school ... almost 20 years ago ... Here we are at our wedding ... ten years ago ... And here's one from this year. Love you, sweetie. Happy Valentine's Day! Happy Tuesday! And Happy Valentine's Day!
