Some of the kids sang the theme song during church Sunday morning. Last week our church held VBS. This year's theme was Kingdom Rock: Stand Strong for Jesus. The kids had a wonderful time (as always) and learned so much. I was in charge of preschool crafts again this year and had a great time doing that. I thought I'd share a few pictures from our week. Laura and I made this castle from cardboard boxes for the preschool craft room. The entrance to the craft room. Daniel Allison and Georgie Jack We made these watercolor crosses the day we learned about Jesus dying on the cross. We started with a blank sheet of white paper with a cross traced on it. The kids had to color the cross with white crayon. Then when we water colored the paper the cross stayed white. It was a wonderful way to show the kids that even though we can't see Jesus (like when the colored the cross white) we know He is there. If we trust, He will show us the way (like when we painted the page). We made wooden photo frames that held a picture of them from earlier in the week. We also made a prayer book from their hand prints which they filled with pictures of who they liked to pray for.
We have had a GREAT week at VBS! Our VBS was Kingdom Rock, where kids stand strong for God! I started taking their pictures every day...

If you see a castle, fair maidens, squires, and a king you might be at Kingdom Rock! Original scripts, amazing stage designs and a flying dragon made Northside's Kingdom Rock VBS one-of-a kind! The castle in the Kingdom. It was constructed mostly of Cordalite. The silver bands around the turret, the red bands at the base of the red peaks, and the red framing around the windows are pool noodles. Twisted paper vines with paper leaves The message of salvation is always presented on the fourth night. The cross rose over Kingdom Rock. In the foreground you can see golden crowns that were laid at the foot of the cross. The castle in the Kingdom. It was constructed mostly of Cordalite. The silver bands around the turret, the red bands at the base of the red peaks, and the red framing around the windows are pool noodles. The Kingdom Rock where the dragon lives. The dragon was scaring the villagers so they hired a dragon tamer . It turns out that the dragon wasn't scary at all, he was just shy! Once the dragon tamer convinced the dragon that the villagers were friendly and kind, he came out to see everyone. He could even fly (because he was attached to a cherry picker hydraulic lift)! The Flying Dragon The Flying Dragon Each night a Bible character was introduced. They made a grand entrance to music and a procession through the crowd. Each one had a sign pole that was placed on the stage as they arrived. "Family Signs" were posted prominently so the kids could find their group. The kids could write out something that they were thankful for. As the week went on they were added to a "stone wall." We could visibly see the wall rise around the castle as each day progressed. Each class had a "Family Sign" so that they could easily find their group. On the last night the kids made luminaries in their Craft time. As they left they discovered that their luminaries had been placed around the cross. It was just beautiful!
During the summer of 2013, our church ran a VBS program. We used the Kingdom Rock program from Groups. If your church is using the Kingdom Rock program for this summer check out the decorations that we made for our program! My brother in law Ben made all of the knights that hung on the walls throughout the church. We even hung decorations from the ceiling and duct tape chain mail across the doors. Some of our very talented church members decorated plastic so it looked like we had a stone walkway on the floor. They repeated the stone pattern along the walls. Hand made draw bridge

Some of you know we attend a fantastic church that really works hard to reach out to kids and show them God's love. Each year our entire church community pulls together and puts on the most amazing VBS. This year there were over 750 kids and more then 500 volunteers. Don and I have volunteered for VBS for the past 4 years and it has been such a joy for us to do. This year we worked with 1st graders again. We had a small group of about 12 kids and they were so great to work with. Our boys also get to join in the fun and learning. Kyle this year was in the Kindergarten group (VBS is for K-6 graders). Ryan because we volunteer was with the pre-schoolers and Brady in the nursery. VBS is full of dramatic bible lessons, GREAT music, crafts and oh so much fun. The kids learn so much and have such a great time. This years theme was Kids of the Kingdom and the kids learned about the Armor of God (Shield of Faith, Sword of the Spirit, Breastplate of Righteousness, Helmet of Salvation, Belt of Truth). The set design and all the props throughout the church were amazing. It was so real looking you would have thought you had just stepped into a real castle. This is the main stage set...amazing and so realistic! Was not just a backdrop doors worked and people stood on the upper balcony. It is so great to be a part of a church that not only is committed to helping lead our kids to Christ but has hundreds of talented volunteers that truly making this a one-of-a-kind week. Kyle and his friend Carly love VBS!! Ryan loves the music...knows all the words and motions to all the songs.

The Middle School Medieval Day was a great turn out for the kids. Their houses put in a lot of effort into making beautiful costumes out of recycled materials and code of arms to represent their house colors. Red, white and black had a fun time in these medieval games. Roberto Maureria form 8th grade said that he and his teammates took about two to three weeks building and decorating their white costumes. “I really do believe my house has a HUGE chance to win today” said Roberto. After the games inside the coliseum, Maureen Harrison from 8th grade said that the red house was doing well so far but that they were beginning to get tired and very hot. She also recommended that for the next activity she would like to see water games because it was over 30°. After a lunch break the rest of the game took part outside. There was a sand castle competition which all the girls were very excited about. Also in the other end of the field there was one of the major competitions of the day the horse challenge. Naria Rodriguez from the white house was the first to compete against Natalia Medina from the black house. “It was one of the most amusing competitions of the day!”Said Jose Mario Zambrana. Natalia beat Naira but she did not seem too happy about the results. Ms. Rodriguez was later interviewed and said that even though Natalia was chosen as the winner she wanted a rematch, which was later on won by Natalia. Annalee Davis form 6th grade mentioned that even though she had a fun time, there were many arguments about points and who won what. She also said that she wouldn’t mind if there were some water games or something to cool off for the next time they had some sort of activity like this one. Jose Carlos Paz seemed to agree with Annalee recommending that there should be water games or actual spots. “I think that people in the medieval times would have enjoyed modern games like capture the flag or a slip and slide! I know I would like it!” he said as he let out a laugh.
Hello everyone and thanks for stopping by Nonna's Craft Corner! We just wrapped up another awesome VBS at Westgate Church of Christ and I thought I would share a few pictures with you. My husband, myself and a very good friend worked on the set for about 2 months before VBS actually started. We had some major ups and downs with this one (like a screen falling on it and crushing part of it), but we managed to pull it together... *The castle walls are made of 2 inch foam insulation sheets that are 4 X 8 feet. We cut, painted, glued, nailed and duct taped the sections together to form our walls. * The "torches" were ordered from Group and run on batteries. They have a tiny little fan that blows the "fire" and the kids loved them. * A wonderful friend let us borrow several of the props we used this year. The throne and this table added so much to our set - thank you Susan! * We filled paint buckets with cement and inserted PVC pipe into the cement to help support each column. The PVC runs up the back of each column. At the top we added a T joint and a small piece of PVC to jut out in front of the set. We used these to drape our purple fabric over the front of the set. * It was a wonderful blessing to have 2 of my 4 grands attend this year's VBS! Emma and Blake and had a great time! You can see more of the VBS sets we worked on over the past few years by clicking here. I know this isn't my "usual" type of project to share with you, but it's been a major part of my life for the last few months and I just had to show you! Thanks so much for stopping by and I'll be seeing you (with a more "typical" project to share) soon..... Until next time,
