This is a simple and easy to use lesson plan on siege weapons and the building of castles during the Middle Ages. Have your students watch the short video clips on siege weapons during the Middle Ages and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each weapon or technology. The video clips are from a great BBC show called Battle Castle. Click here to see the short video clips! The positive and negatives of the following weapons and technologies are covered in the short video clips: Siege Ladders Heavyweight Crossbows Long Bows Medium Crossbows Medieval Siege Tower Perrier Siege Artillery (Light Catapult) Mangonel Siege Artillery (Heavy Catapult) Trebuchet Siege Artillery Stone Carving (Castle Bricks) Castle Construction Each short video is about one to three minutes long. Each video does a great job explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon technology. The short videos do a great job of going along with any lessons on castles or the Middle Ages in general. Students will find the video interesting and engaging, especially male students. From my perspective this is one of the most student friendly videos about siege warfare and shows students how the weapons worked without being gruesome. With discussion and answering of questions in class this video worksheet will take at least 30 to 50 minutes to complete. The worksheet includes 17 questions and has an answer sheet for the teacher, but most of the questions are open ended to allow the students to think about their answers.
