This was tucked behind another photo in a frame. On the back was handwritten: "Seven Arch Bridge about 5 miles east of Humboldt, Kansas." I don't recognize the handwriting. Taped over that was a typed piece of paper which reads: "This Seven Arch Stone Bridge is located one mile south and five and one-half miles east of Humboldt (Allen Co. Kansas). It was built in 1898 by Gottlieb Roehl. Allen County would not furnish the money for this type bridge unless Mr. Roehl agreed to take the contract very cheap. He took the contract because he wanted the bridge in order to beautify his farm. Roehl's sons, Fred and Henry, did the masonry work. Some of the neighbors helped with the labor. Among them were Bill Mueller and his son Herman. There was a Fred Crane who lived with the Roels at the time and a Fred Fisher of Humboldt. Gottlieb Roehl was born March 5, 1843 and died November 1, 1903. He is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. The above historical data was obtained from Miss Margaret Rath of Kansas City, Mo., with the assistance of her father, John (Jack) Rath of Humboldt whose parents were former neighbors of the Roehls."
