At Christmas, what better use of the internet is there than to share some hilariously creepy Christmas card art? Terrify your children with these classics.
I love vintage cards! These are the latest score from a Poughkeepsie junk shop on Route 9, and I got an entire box for $1. For some reason, they're easy to find, and they're usually really cheap. These are from the bottom end of the Christmas card market, and are kind of cheesy, but who can resist them? The Santa ones are all covered with dusty red flocking, and the kitten on the sled is a little pathetic. I like the dry brush style ornaments, they look very late 50s to me. The cards are all done by Whitman. I have some vintage paper dolls, and the Whitman ones are all done using this technique. I guess it was the style of their in house illustrators. Another detail: all the vintage Christmas cards I have are done on paper, as opposed to card stock, so it's pretty amazing that they've lasted this long, especially the ones from the 40s. And the box that these came in was from an old massage vibrator. It was so awful looking, that I actually decoupaged over it! But, I do like the Eloise Wilkins style children dancing around Santa and riding on his sled... they're really pretty sweet.

Anthropomorphic cats, murderous frogs, and insects dancing by the moonlight aren't exactly part of our Christmas card tradition today.

Victorian Christmas cards don't look anything like the commercialized and happy greeting cards we're all used to today. They're cards were creepy and grim.
Um, our ancestors were weird, y'all. Maybe we're just missing some context that would make these bizarre Victorian Christmas cards make sense?

Since I was a child, I've long believed at the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve ~ the Animals gather from farm & field to offer their voices ~ to us which they yield: "a Happy Christmas to one and all" ... then head wearily back to their stall or branch, nest or burrow deep into the night and whisper a sleepy "...to all aGood Night!" ©L.Brechlin 2016 〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰〰 Well, that's they way I see it anyway... what better time for our beloved fur, feathered & finned friends ~ to become magically outspoken but on Christmas Eve? I remember fighting sleep each year waiting for a chance to hear tiny voices from our kittens ~ that I imagined would sound something like a baby talking in a high-pitch. {but, then again at that age I believed I could hear the stars twinkling at night too} ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ ✴ My love for animals has no bounds, and I will gladly sacrifice any morsel of food I have to one who is hungry ~ or happily kneel in dirt to gently pat one who may be scared or hurt. oh we could learn so much from them... if we'd only listen. here are a few {ok, ALOT} of my favorite antique Christmas postcards depicting animals ~ found these all on Pinterest... my very favorite, of course are the kittens & cats: ~ for my dog-loving friends: and various others ~ and remember all of our woodland friends too: Happy Christmas Eve to you! Every year I look forward to December 13 - St. Lucia Day. Probably because my ancestral heritage is half Swedish, her day is extra special to me. If you've followed my blog for any amount of time, you've doubtless read one of my many posts (including yesterday's) about this beloved saint - aka "Saint Lucy". Past Posts: Children's books about Saint Lucia Our Family Remembrances Photoblog: How to Make Lucia Buns St. Lucia Procession: A Crown of Light Today I'm sharing a tried-and-true recipe for Lucia buns - "Lussekatter" - and a tongue-in-cheek short video you can watch while the "Lussekatter" rise. Enjoy! LUCIA BUNS Ingredients: 1 cup melted butter 1 cup milk 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 pkg. dry active yeast (4 1/2 tsp) 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 t. cardamom 2 eggs, well-beaten, plus one egg white raisins or currants to decorate (Prep time: 120 minutes. Bake time: 15 minutes) Procedure: Heat milk to a light boil, turning off heat when it reaches the scalding point (with small bubbles across the top). Stir in melted butter, sugar, and salt. Pour mixture into mixing bowl and allow to cool until “finger-warm” (still quite warm, but just cool enough to touch). Stir in yeast and let sit for 10 minutes. Add cardamom to 3 1/2 cups flour; mix flour into liquid. Stir in two well-beaten eggs. Add enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough (just until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. You don't want to add too much flour). Transfer dough to a large greased bowl and turn to coat all sides. Cover with a clean towel and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch down risen dough. Lightly knead two or three times on a floured surface. Pinch off small handfuls of dough (about 2 1/4") and roll into long "snakes." Shape snakes into "X"-shaped buns or other desired shapes. source Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, cover with the towel again, and allow to rise until doubled (about an hour). Decorate buns with raisins, brush with egg white, and bake in preheated 375º oven about 15 minutes, just until brown. Ah… Christmas is (almost) in the air. I suspect, however, that “sweet scent” I smell is not so sweet after all, but is actually the sweaty smell of fear and desperation. Relax! No longe…
