Glasgow-based designer Jane McDevitt collects vintage matchboxes. “It was the eastern bloc ones that stood out,” she says, “because they were so contemporary to their time: very mid-century modern and colourful.” Her collection embraces matchboxes from Czechoslovakia, Poland and Russia from the 1950s to the 80s. These matchbooks feature no dire warnings on the affects … Continue reading "Matchbloc: Gorgeous East European Matchboxes"

“Art Nouveau – but make it spooky.” That’s Karl Alexander Wilke (1879-1954) in a nutshell. When first we found the Austrian-German illustrator, who carved out his own delightfully eerie corner of Art Nouveau artworks through clever magazines covers and adverts, we were suitably jazzed. Quite frankly, we’re pleasantly slack jawed that some of these babies…

A wonderful free collection of vintage educational posters including the complete Adolphe Millot collection of natural history illustrations.
Information on the charming set of matchbox covers featured in this post is hard to come by. I know they’re Japanese, any idiot can see that. And I know that their date of origin is almost certainly from before 1950. They stem from a collection of matchbox “labels” that is on Flickr and that has recently become one of my favorite places on the Internet. Vintage Japanese matchbox covers are incredible. The person who runs that set of images, who uses the Flickr username maraid, explains that the collection had been the passion of the grandfather of a friend, and also that the images date from “1920s-1940s.” All of the covers feature an image of an unaccompanied woman in a state of undress. There is more than one woman in the series. The images have a very consistent palette of a blue, red, green, and a cream color used mainly for the skin. Sometimes the model is outdoors, but mostly she is indoors. She is never shown doing anything particularly erotic, just hanging out or fooling around with her kitties, that’s was evidently erotic enough back in the day. Some of the images derive from an artist’...

BLANK INSIDE This enchanting scene by Florence Choate was originally featured in a 1916 book titled Daddy's Bedtime Fairy Stories by Mary Graham Bonner. The book was part of a series of fine leather-bound bedtime books, accompanied by illustrations from Choate and her enduring creative partner, Elizabeth A. Curtis. Known for their expertise in depicting sweet children, fairies, and moments of wonder in fairy tales, all three elements are magically illustrated in this one image! Florence Choate (1878-1967), born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was active during the Golden Age of Illustration. She honed her skills at the Art Students League in New York, where she received scholarships in portrait and figure drawing. It was during this time that she crossed paths with Elizabeth A. Curtis, a fellow student who would become her lifelong collaborator. Together, they crafted over 20 children's books. While little else is known about Choate, her artistic legacy lives on—the collection at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum includes nearly 500 drawings from her estate! This product was custom designed and created at our location in Seattle. Shop our entire Fantastic Fairies Collection!

These illustrations are from a FIRST EDITION of the classic A Child's Garden of Verses, illustrated by the wonderful Jessie Wilcox Smith. These illustrations are reproduced quite a bit--but they are never as fresh as when scanned directly from a first edition, which I own. The difference is obvious.
