Abbé Pierre François Guyot-Desfontaines (1685-1745) was the target of many of Voltaire's epigrams after he published La Voltairomanie, making public a number of scandalous stories and accusations about Voltaire and incurring a lawsuit for libel. His response appears to have been to retreat from the public eye and produce these translations of the works of Virgil, which appeared five years after the Voltaire scandal.
