Inspector Mark Coulson at the Mocha Parade. Police in Salford arrested 44 people in a week long crackdown on organised crime. More than fifty officers took part in the initiative between 18 and 24 February 2013 where arrests were made for a variety of offences including possession of a firearm (imitation hand gun and CS gas), burglary and drug related crime. It resulted in 30 warrants being carried out and saw police recover firearms, drugs with an estimated street value of £20,000 and cash. Eleven vehicles were seized and 58 fixed penalty notices were also given. The crackdown was part of Operation Skyhawk which was first launched by Salford Division in November to tackle concerns of organised crime. It was carried out in partnership with Salford City Council, Salix Homes, UK Border Agency, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), Youth Offending Service and Trading Standards, Inspector Mark Coulson of the Salford East Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The work of this operation shows our community that we take their concerns about organised crime seriously and we will come down hard on those people taking part in criminality. “By working with our partners we have been able to make a difference to our communities and show the ongoing solidarity we have in the fight against organised crime.” As part of the initiative the team also held a community briefing at Mocha Parade, Lower Broughton on Thursday 21 February at 11am. At the event officers were able to update the community, which included 120 pupils from River View Primary School in Salford on the recent police activity. Inspector Coulson added: “The event was an opportunity to keep the community updated on the work we have been doing. It shows them that police are working hard and that they can feel safe in their area. “By explaining the work of Operation Skyhawk, residents can tell us their concerns and feel reassured that work is being done to address them.” Cllr David Lancaster, deputy city mayor of Salford said: “This is a great outcome for communities in Salford, showing how working in partnership delivers real results against crime.” To find out more about Greater Manchester Police please visit our website. www.gmp.police.uk You should call 101, the new national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.
