I first observed these two Black Vulture on the steeple of the Grace Lutheran Church in Carrollton, Texas. The vultures had been attracted to the area by a road-killed Nutria on Hebron Parkway. Black Vultures Roadkill Nutria Hebron Parkway is a very busy street, and the vultures had no hope of ever accessing the carcass...
Egyptian vultures are listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of approximately 30,000-40,000 individuals word-wide. Their numbers have decreased very rapidly over the last few generations, with an estimated decline of over 50% of the population in Spain over the last 40 years. The current population estimate in all of Europe is 6,000 individuals. Numbers declined by app. 68% from 2000 to 2003 in the Indian subcontinent, likely due to Diclofenac, a veterinary drug which is responsible for widespread and catastrophic declines of vultures. The species ranges from southern Europe, through the Middle East, Africa, & India. (IUCN Red List) Fundacion Gypaetus is in the early phases of establishing a captive breeding program for the species for potential releases in Andalucia. www.gypaetus.org

King Vulture taken at the St. Louis Zoo. Rural South Americans believed that if the shadow of a King Vulture fell on a person, that person would suffer misfortune or death. Luckily, I had good lighting when I took this. Partakorppikotkat vainottiin 1800-luvulla lähes sukupuuttoon Euroopan vuoristoseuduilta, koska niiden uskottiin pyydystävän jopa lapsia. Lajia on palautettu luontoon jo 20 vuoden ajan. Lähes sata vapautettua tarhalintua on kasvattanut siivilleen jo muutamia kymmeniä jälkeläisiä. Myös Korkeasaaren eläintarha on osallistunut partakorppikotkien luontoonpalautukseen.

Native Americans also deemed the vulture as a symbol of renewal and linked it with renewal themes seen in the rising of a new sun every day . The Mayans had their ideas about bird symbolism. So, the vulture was considered a symbol of cleansing , renewal and transformation. It's also associated with water and the vulture controls the rain.

An individual from the breeding center operated by Fundacion Gypaetus in the mountains of Jaen in Andalucia, Spain. The organization does an excellent job breeding and releasing the birds into the rugged mountains of southern Spain where they recently went extinct. Fundacion Gypaetus has worked extensively to mitigate risks to the species in the area, and the reintroduction so far has been a tremendous success. See their website at www.gypaetus.org/ for more information and to donate, volunteer, or see other great pics of the species and region.
