Images via Koron007 Centuries ago, fabric was a rare and precious commodity only the wealthy could afford. So people treasured old and worn-out pieces of clothing to recycle and reuse in order to make new clothes. Thus the sakiori was born. Sakiori comes from the word "saki" which means to tear up or rip and "ori" which means weave. Recycling old fabric remnants into sakiori weavings follows the Japanese indispensable concept of “mottainai” or not wasting precious cloth that can prolong the fabric’s useful life through recycling and reuse. Weaving all these remnants of fabric was immensely hard work back then, however very rewarding and worth the effort as clothing made from repurposed cotton was vastly warmer, softer, and more durable than the rough linens that could be made from Japan’s natural fibers. Sakiori was mostly used to make rugs and covers, but also clothes - mostly jackets and vests. Today, the technique is experiencing a resurgence as a "green", ethical and economical art form. I had my ups and downs but over all I think I actually like weaving with mohair. It was definitely a change of pace from my normal weaving. My style is usually heavy with texture, so this was a challenge to make something lighter. Mohair is much more tacky then the yarns I usually weave with,

Handwoven artisan belt (tablet weaving) with a colorful design - made to order in your desired length. Such a belt can be used in historical reenactment or as a festival belt, ethnic dress belt, boho accessory, handfasting cord, guitar strap, etc. On bands longer than 100 cm the pattern will change direction, you can see that in the pictures. Length: choose. Length does not include tassels; it is only the woven part. If you order, e.g., 200 cm with tassels, it means your belt will be 200 cm + ca. 30 cm tassels = 230 cm in total. Width: about 5 cm Colour: reds, yellows, browns. If you would like something else - purchase this and write your palette in the personalisation section during checkout. Green version: https://wicistore.etsy.com/listing/1700999058 Material: 100% wool (various types) Technique: threaded-in pattern, tablet weaving Historical inspiration: This is my original pattern designed following the logic of ancient and medieval tablet weaving techniques. Geometric patterns are suitable for the historical reenactment of Celtic, Scandinavian, Rus, Slavic, Anglo-Saxon, and other Iron Age and early medieval peoples. Wash with care, hand wash only! What is this craft? Tablet (card) weaving is an ancient craft of making strong, narrow, decorative bands. In the past men and women wore tablet woven bands as belts, leg wraps, hair bands or garment trims. Today tablet woven bands are used in historical reenactment (from Celtic to late medieval Europe), SCA, larp, folk costumes and all kinds of pagan, fantasy or Viking societies. They can also serve as handfasting cords, guitar straps, bag straps, bookmarks, etc. Custom orders Drop me a line if you would like to order a custom band. I weave all the bands myself and will be happy to discuss your idea for colours, pattern, material etc. Worldwide shipping with tracking number. When we visited Te Puia, we had a chance to visit the schools of Carving and Weaving. As the Māori did not have a written language until the 19th century, carvings were used to record and preserve the history and culture of their people. Ornate Māori carvings can be found on meeting houses, canoes, weapons
