Many schools participate in Week of Respect. It's a week for accepting and celebrating differences while discovering common interests. Check out some ways to incorporate a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T into your lessons! 1. Use morning announcements to make suggestions for showing respect. These ideas could be separated into categories such as respect for family, respect for friends, respect for animals, respect in public places, respect for the environment, etc. 2. Create kindness rocks. Students paint rocks with inspirational messages and hide them around the community for others to find. You never know who you may inspire! 3. Make a new friend. Challenge students to play with someone new during recess. 4. Write messages about respect on the sidewalks. Students could research quotes and use sidewalk chalk to motivate others. 5. Have a respect your elders day. Have students make cards or pictures for nursing home and assisted living residents. 6. Have a theme week. Examples to include: Have a Mismatch Clothes Day to remind us that we may be different but we can all get along. Another day could be Team Jersey Day to show that we may belong to different teams but we all enjoy the game. 7. Have students complete a choice board: Week of Respect Choice Board The benefits of Week of Respect activities just may continue throughout the school year! Are you a subscriber yet? October is just around the corner, which means it is time for the “Week of Respect” to return to a school near you. Annually, New Jersey mandates public
During the first week of October (Oct. 1 - 5, 2012), New Jersey held its second annual "Week of Respect" which was created as part of the state's anti-bullying law. During the week of respect, we are asked to include something in our lesson plans that reinforces the importance of treating all people with respect. I was thinking about respect and the importance of respect in the math classroom and I realized that the kind of bullying that I usually see in a math classroom is students laughing when other people make mistakes. I think it is very important that my students feel safe in my classroom and know that if they make a mistake that they will not be ridiculed. So for my lesson on respect I decided to talk about "math bullying." I start out the lesson by asking my students what they think a "math bully" is and that usually elicits some interesting comments. My definition of a "math bully" is something who laughs or ridicules another person when they make a mistake. Then I share with them some quotes that I found on the importance of making mistakes in the learning process. Making mistakes simply means you are learning faster. --West H. Agor Constant effort and frequent mistakes are the stepping stones of genius. --Elbert Hubbard Mistakes are the portals of discovery. --James Joyce The many who achieves makes many mistakes, but he never makes the biggest mistake of all - doing nothing. --Benjamin Franklin Never say, "Oops." Always say "Ah, interesting." --Author Unknown It's okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are our teacher - they help us to learn. --John Bradshaw I have not failed. I've just found ten thousand ways that won't work. --Thomas Edison After we read the quotes together I shared this Respect Pledge: And then I invited all the students to cut out a geometric shape and write their name on the shape and add it to the Respect Pledge classroom mural at the back of the room. I like the fact that this activity gives us a chance to do a quick review of some geometry vocabulary while at the same time it illustrates that we are all different and unique and we come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Sneak character education into your classroom by creating a respect corner in your room with this easy-to-assemble bulletin board kit. The interactive bulletin board is easy to implement. It’s simple design stays up for one month of respect focus - or all year if you'd like! I’ve chosen one quote for each week that I believe exemplifies respect. The quotes increase in complexity with each new week and can become an anchor for each week’s social/emotional learning. Change out the mantra each week and practice saying it with your students a few times each day. Students fill out shout-out slips to recognize their classmates’ respectful actions, and one student who exemplified this trait each week will take home the quote of the week on Friday. Included in this interactive bulletin board: - monthly character trait (respect) - definition - interchangeable mantras - shout-out slips and pockets - 4 quotes of the week - color and black & white bulletin boards included - editable speech bubble for creating your own quotes Need more character education? A kindness tree activity is a fun and effective whole school project to build community!A kindness tree bulletin board is a beautiful and creative way to encourage and acknowledge acts of kindness
The world respect gets used a lot in a classroom. You're constantly telling someone to have it or asking another one if they have it. It's a word that's lost its meaning with our students. They know they hear the word a lot and they can get the sense that they've never been told what it means to have respect, how to show it or even why they should show it. And starting down this path of thinking gets me on my soap box about how this is the exact reason character education and social/emotional development is just as important as math and reading. If you don't have any idea how to behave, then you're never going to be in a frame of mind to learn anything. So I created this printable during a year with a class that tested everything I had as a teacher and a person. It's always good to have a visual reference of what you expect out of your students.
