I know you. No, really, I know what you had for breakfast - steel cut oats with cinnamon, they’re not only good, but good for you! And what brand of soap is in your shower; it’s Irish Spring; fresh, invigorating - and which toothpaste you prefer - good old Crest Regular Paste of course. See? Told you.
I have been in this dark place for so long, I’ve lost track of time. It’s hard to remember when I was last allowed out into the pasture. Days have gone by, days piled on days, weeks following weeks, months slipping away. It is dark and cold. I can feel winter approaching.

I’ve written my son David’s obituary. I’ve written one almost every month since he moved from our hometown all the way to London. It’s hard not to worry about your children, and he’s our only son. There’s something about the process of writing it all down that feels pragmatic. This was the first one I wrote after he left:
“Chaos is simply order we don’t understand yet,” Crystal said. She lounged on the red couch that she and her husband moved to the middle of the living room an hour ago.
Spring has the sort of air you breathe in making you feel fresh again, clean and confident. Leaves fluttered to the scent of pine and gardenia. There was a warbling chatter of birds completing this picture. It was going to be a remarkable day, particularly for Blake Stephens.
Failing light fell through the front window, warmed a degree or two by the brown drapes. High quality to begin with, the drapes had faded hardly at all over thirty years. They had been a good choice, and Cheryl had seen no need to change them because Robert was gone.
Perhaps that was the way
The rain began that Saturday morning and pounded Nashville all day. It was a driving, insistent rain that drowned out thoughts of anything else, even before the local news preempted programming to report cars stranded on the interstates and residents trapped in their homes by rising waters.
Nothing smells quite like a desert rain. The drops fall on sand and dirt and dried scrub brush, releasing the odors of life from blossoms and fruit, from the dry, cracked earth and the brittle, brown branches of mesquite and juniper, of saltbush and creosote.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery using gold-infused lacquer to mend the broken bits back together. In doing so, this technique eschews the ever-elusive notion of perfection in favor of honoring the history of the object despite its perceived flaws. The marks of wear are seen as a sign of strength, valued as a record of events that took place during its lifespan to be honored accordingly as pieces that make up the whole. What was once broken is not lost. Oh, if we could only translate this beautiful philosophy to our writing!

Why we shouldn’t worry about leaving print behind.
Maybe we shouldn't, but we all judge books by their covers before we read them. The books and magazine presented in this post are the ones that make a
For a while there was only Sven, his wife Rana, and his dog Argos. When Rana died, Sven experienced a new depth of loneliness no mortal could have suspected existed. Then came the period of going about life with only Argos, and Sven understood better than anyone ever has, except perhaps Odysseus, the perfection of a dog’s validation of one’s existence. One day he realized it had been a long time since he had seen another human being, and that’s when the idea that he was the last survivor wormed its way into his head. Then as Argos began to grow unsteady on his legs and lose his appetite, Sven looked around hard in all directions without seeing a soul, and his suspicion began to harden into fact.
The late August sun scorched Edgar’s bare neck and weighed him down as if he were carrying another man on his back. The air was thick with humidity. Each gulped breath was like inhaling through a soggy sponge. It was only 10:30 in the morning. But on this oppressive Sunday, he was determined to tear down the rotting play structure in his backyard.

Praise for earlier editions: \"[These poets] prove that American poetry has the strength and vision to move beyond the MFA environment in order to reshape and reflect past traditions.\"-- Bloomsbury Review\"This collection stands out among the crowd claiming to represent emergent poets. Much of the editing and preliminary reading was done by emerging poets themselves, which results in an anthology that's fresh and eclectic, and may actually represent a significant portion of the best new poetry being written by the next generation.... [Best New Poets] assures the reader that poetry, even in a generation of text messaging and MP3 players, is still alive and well. The youthfulness of the anthology, combined with the wide scope of its contents, is apparent in the poems, which are edgy and daring.\"-- Virginia Quarterly ReviewEntering its eighth year, Best New Poets has established itself as a crucial venue for rising poets and a valuable resource for poetry lovers. The only publication of its kind, this annual anthology is made up exclusively of work by writers who have not yet published a full-length book. The poems included in this eclectic sampling represent the best from the many that have been nominated by the country's top literary magazines and writing programs, as well as some two thousand additional poems submitted through an open online competition. The work of the fifty writers represented here provides the best perspective available on the continuing vitality of poetry as it is being practiced today.
