The largest-ever astronomical project, ALMA, is a herculean cooperation between three continents to build and network 66 radio antennas at 16,500 feet.
Before the adoption of the NATO class of battleships in 2051 the United States entertained numerous design proposals for its next generation replacement of the Oregon class. Perhaps the most unique of these was the Iowa 2040+, a proposal that claimed to reduce production time and cost by retrofitting the four existing hulls of America’s last great battleships. The proposal suggested buying back the hulls and extensively modernizing them. This included entirely replacing the superstructure as well as 90% of the ship’s internals. Unfortunately, due to the condition of the ships in question and the related cost of bringing them back to seaworthy state any cost savings brought from using existing infrastructure was all but lost. Even so, the idea of bringing America’s last battleships back to the frontlines was appealing to many in Washington, if only on an emotional level, and so the project was funded at least through its design phase. - U.S.S.
