Built in response to both an upsurge of theatrical entertainment in Victorian New Zealand, and a decision to commemorate Queen Victoria's record reign, the Whanganui Opera House gained national and international recognition for its architecture and acoustics. Discussions began as early as 1897, and a national competition to find a suitable design was held the following year. The winning entry was submitted by architect George C. Stevenson, who also designed hospitals in Australia, such as the Mercy and Royal Melbourne Hospital. Stevenson died before the foundation was laid in July 1899. The build was completed in five months at a total cost of £5,200, and was opened on 9 February 1900, by the Premier, Richard Seddon. Designed in keeping with the neighbouring Council Chambers, a feature of the building was the domed ceiling above the dress circle. In 1920, alterations were made to enable the theatre to show films on a regular basis, and it became the home of the Municipal Picture Theatre. A fire damaged much of the Opera House in 1937, and it was closed for several months while repairs were done. By 1938, the cost of running the Opera House was considered too great for the council, and it was decided to offer the building to the community to run. The Whanganui Opera House is a Category 1 Historic Place on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Register Further information can be found here: www.historic.org.nz/theregister/registersearch/RegisterRe... www.royaloperahouse.co.nz/ www.nzhistory.net.nz/page/wanganui-opera-house-opened Archives reference: ABKK W4358 24414 Box 555 1967 (R23460429) collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=23460429 For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/ArchivesNZ Material from Archives New Zealand
