This is a complete lesson with all student materials to help students write their own poems in the style of George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From.” This lesson begins with a structured brainstorm and requires students to draft a poem. Then, students go through three rounds of feedback, each with a different person. The rounds of feedback are focused on figurative language and identifying commonalities, determining central idea and theme and editing for conventions. This is a great beginning of the year or class culture building activity, as it encourages students to get to know each other and find what they have in common with their classmates, as well as what makes them unique. This lesson would also fit logically into any unit on poetry. It is designed for 2 90-minute class periods, one for drafting and one for finalizing and presentations, and can be used in grades 7 and up. This product includes a rubric for grading as well. This product is included in the “Where I’m From: Complete Study” or it can be purchased on its own. This product aligns to CCSS anchor standard R.4 and to W.2.

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.
