Giving yourself the proper amount of time to move through it before you begin dating again is imperative to being in a healthy place and being able to sustain the relationship when you do find your next soul mate. There's no set amount of time to wait before dating again, everyone is different. Wait until you've turned a corner with your grief and can think of your late spouse in peace. Do you feel you're ready?

Finding love again after the loss of a spouse has to happen in a process, in steps. It can't happen overnight and it can't happen all at once. The good news is, once you commit to those steps and take the first one, the rest follow one after another. Breaking it down into smaller steps makes it less overwhelming and helps you enter the dating world again with confidence and hope.

One of the best ways I prepare my clients for the nerves of dating is to have a few questions in their purse for their dates. Easy questions, things they wouldn't mind answering themselves, from "what was your favorite vacation?" to "what's in your refrigerator right now?"
One things many widows have in common is feeling like a burden. It can feel as if your emotions are too much, causing you to keep them to yourself and attempt healing on your own. Having a support system is so important, and surrounding yourself with people who love you will ensure that they are there and ready to help you. It's up to you to allow them to help. As tempting as it can be to isolate, lean on your support system and know you are not a burden, you are loved.
Without clarity, we can drift aimlessly and never quite reach true contentment or accomplish what we want for our lives. Once we get clear on what we're looking for and what we need, it becomes an easier process of finding and bringing it into our world in a way that supports and serves us. There are certain steps involved with getting yourself to a healthy place to find love again, and then steps to take in the process itself of finding love again. In learning to become your own best friend during the healing process after the loss of a spouse, it's imperative that you train your mind to begin focusing on the positive things about yourself rather than the negative. This keeps us in a space where we value ourselves and know we have something to offer another person, which helps us move confidently into the dating world and not settle for less than we deserve. We often lose this balance when we begin dating. Make an extra effort to use both your head AND your heart as you journey through dating. They each play a significant part in who you date and in keeping you safe and healthy throughout the dating experience.
Taking care of ourselves while going through the grieving process is so important. Work at feeding yourself well, taking time for activities you enjoy, getting enough sleep, and connecting with others as part of your routine when moving through this grief. These things will help keep a sense of normalcy and wellness in your life as you find your new normal.
Enjoying each other while doing the simplest of things is one of the most beautiful pieces of a relationship. Find someone you can spend time with while working on your laptop, reading a book, or writing in a journal, and their presence makes your life better just in itself. It's important that we feel comfortable in the everyday with our partners, as this is how we'll spend most of our time!
One of the things I help my clients with is falling in love with themselves and making themselves their own best friend: what I view as one of the most important steps in the process to finding love again. It's essential to be able to support and rely on yourself through the dating process, and to continue that relationship with yourself once you do enter into a new relationship. We create a solid foundation of self-love for you to build your dating experience on.
Dating as your best self is empowering. The process I take you through after losing your spouse is finalized with an outcome that is incredibly rewarding: you'll be able to recognize the right partner and real love and have the tools to make it work in your life in a healthy way.
Join groups that do likeminded activities that you love to meet new people, make new friends, and find potential partners who you have something in common with. It's one of the best ways to come into contact with new people that you already have shared interests with!
Dealing with friends and family is one of the toughest parts of dating as a widow. There will be opinions on your decision to date again and how soon, and those opinions don't have to influence your choices. Set healthy boundaries and keep them in check as you ease back into dating.
Now is the perfect time to simplify your time spent with the person you're dating. Zoom dates, walks around the neighborhood, bike rides, can all be perfect for spending some time together while minding social distancing rules. Try being creative and see what you can come up with!
Commitment, perseverance, and optimism - three things that can be cultivated and used to help you in finding the new love of your life after widowhood, just as they helped me. I work with my clients to gain all three. To learn more, download my ebook here: https://widowsdatingcoach.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/After-Widowhood.pdf
