As part of the 2019 London Design Festival, Paul Cocksedge’s ‘Please Be Seated’ has taken over Finsbury Avenue Square in the city’s Broadgate neighborhood. The undulating sculpture is comprised of concentric wooden circles that ribbon up and down to create functional spaces to socialize, rest, and walk through. Cocksedge collaborated with White & White to fabricate the massive steel and upcycled scaffolding wood installation, which the designer described as “walk[ing] the line between a craft object and a design solution. For their recent installation “Study in Pattern,” artists Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen (previously) expanded on the idea of constructing an enormous tree comprised of long wood strips in studio. The result is an arboreal project that occupies almost an entire room with outstretched portions extending up to the ceiling and toward each corner of the space. Visitors to the exhibition were able to peer up through the spiraling trunk of the tree and walk beneath the wide-reaching roots. More
Reclaimed redwood 30 x 12 x 2 inches (for 10 piece installation) The marbled redwood (light and dark) told me what to do with it - I just let the wood guide me for this piece. Three layers of reclaimed redwood, laminated, carved and finished with linseed oil to bring out the natural colors of the wood. The outside is finished with black chalkboard paint. Each of the 10 wood tiles measures about 5.7 x 5.7 inches.

Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira (previously) recently completed work on his largest installation to date titled Transarquitetônica at Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade in São Paulo. As with much of his earlier sculptural and installation work the enormous piece is built from tapumes, a kind of temporary siding made from inexpensive wood that is commonly used to obscure construction sites. Oliveira uses the repurposed wood pieces as a skin nailed to an organic framework that looks intentionally like a large root system. More

Gradient Shou Sugi Ban, wood artwork Dimensions: 56.5" x 30" The exact one in the image is available to ship out right away. This piece is inspired by a Japanese torch technique called Shou Sugi Ban which is an ancient way of preserving wood from the outdoor environment. I decided to put my own spin on it by giving it a gradient look; it showcases the different stages of the wood being torched from light to dark charcoal. The wood used for this art piece is Reclaimed Douglas Fir Beams that are cut into blocks that measure 4-5/8" x4-5/8" x 1-1/8" deep. They are Glued to a maple plywood backer board with a special adhesive that is really strong that will never come apart. The frame is made of Poplar hardwood stained in ebonized finished. The entire piece was sprayed in a low VOC water based sealer to preserve the look of the wood and to give it a zero maintenance finish. If you interested in a custom size please give me a shout and we can discuss the details of your request. Each art piece is hand signed and dated in the back and I also make a custom made laser engraved wood name tag on the side of the piece. I also include a heavy duty aluminum z channel mounting bracket for super easy wall installation. Visit my main website at www.craigforget.com
About While working on a large building project several years ago the artist, Fritz Horstman was struck by the poetry in the unfinished state of the construction site. He was drawn specifically to the space between the plywood walls that were raised as formworks for the pouring of cement. That space could only exist for a few hours before the cement truck arrived, but in that moment it was a revolving abstraction of potential, delineation, growth, and destruction. Once filled it was gone: the plywood was stripped away, the earth was backfilled. To suspend that moment he began building models of formworks. Leaving them unfilled, they are perpetually unfinished. From models based directly on architecture, Horstman expanded to forms found in the landscape. Making a formwork that depicts constraint upon the landscape is not exactly a reversal of the formwork’s function, but it asks different questions than a formwork designed for a building would. Why would you make a cement creek? What is the relationship between a flowing creek and poured cement? Is this a barrier or just delineation? For River Woman ODETTA, in addition to several small sculptures in the Flat File, Horstman will install Formwork for the East River, which describes that river’s shape as it flows from Rikers Island to the tip of Manhattan. The 3 x 18 x 7 foot sculpture includes inlets for the Harlem River and Newtown Creek. One side is defined by the shape of the east side of Manhattan, the other by the western edges of Queens and Brooklyn. Roosevelt Island sits in the middle looking like a casket. Were this formwork poured with concrete, the resulting mass would be a wall, not a river. Acknowledging change, while attempting to hold the moment, the delineated spaces remain conspicuously empty, begging to be filled. During previous installations of several large outdoor Formwork sculptures similar in scale and material to Formwork for the East River at least one person approached and asked when we would pour. Those people had mentally filled the space. These are spaces into which one can pour their thoughts. Two videos will be included in River Woman. In Kannagawa Voices villagers in the small Japanese town of Onishi were asked to make the sounds of their local river with their voices. Ice Voices comes from the artist’s shipmates’ attempts to recreate with their voices the bizarre sounds of Arctic ice. Fritz Horstman works with the landscape and the perception of the perception of natural phenomena. He has recently exhibited his sculptures and installations in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, California, Japan, France, and Norway, and currently is featured in the 2016/17 deCordova Biennial in Lincoln, MA. He has curated exhibitions in New Haven, New York and Svalbard. Recent residencies include Shiro Oni in Onishi, Japan, and The Arctic Circle Residency. He received his MFA from MICA in 2011 and his BA in studio art from Kenyon College in 2001. He is artist residency and education coordinator at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT. Musically he is half of the duo Spacelover.

Barbara Holmes' installation Untitled, No. 5 is a site-specific example of one woman’s trash is another one’s treasure. The spiraling wooden work that was installed at 1045 Mission St. was completely sourced from the city’s own dump, turning thrown away limber into a kaleidoscopic work that spanned both the length and height of the gallery space. Using sourced and reclaimed materials is at the heart of Holmes’ practice, carefully transforming the untidy elements into aesthetically crafted pieces. More
