For years I have marveled at the wonderful style of a house at 1007 W. Vine. My husband and I argued about whether it was an English Cottage or English Arts and Crafts and we have now come to the conclusion it is English Arts and Crafts. Here is that wonderful house in question: The style could almost be called story book, with its's many high pitched gables. It is built very close to the ground and is anchored by the pillars that hold up the cozy porch roof. The simple but complementary trim coming off the gables adds that wonderful arts and crafts touch. I was unable to find any comparable house in Springfield but since the details reminded me of Voysey architecture,I looked for images of his designs: "The houses of Voysey and his followers built in the early 1900s for wealthy clients struck a modern look with their low ceilinged rooms, horizontal windows, roofs sweeping almost down to ground level and rough cast white or pebble dash * walls, although Voysey always saw himself as an architect working firmly within the traditions of English vernacular architecture.." * This house a rough cast or pebble dash walls in the interior porch area.. Here is a drawing outlining the characteristics you may see in an English Arts and Crafts house (from Arts and Crafts House Styles by Trevor Yorke) The photo below shows The White House by Dare Bryan after C. There is something inherently sophisticated and unassuming about a black house. Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE white houses (our own home is white), but I’ve also been not-so-quietly-obsessed with black houses for a really long time. They look particularly beautiful when constructed in timber and set amongst the greenest of countrysides. From a distance, ...

I don't know if it's celebrating each season, or the anticipation of the seasonal change right around the corner, but I find myself being drawn to certain things, or pieces at different times throughout the year. Not as generic as lets say pumpkin spice everything come fall, or coconut smelling soaps and lotions in the summer. No this varies from season to season, and changes throughout the mood. I shared in my first post of Currently Loving that sometimes these things don't have a specific category they fall into, or a designated blog post. I just wanted a place to share what currently has me swooning, and perhaps at the same time it will have you swooning too. Nope this is just a light hearted, what I'm currently loving right now kind of post!

Words by Leah Gwin Photos by Pfeffer Torode Architecture For any company, new or long-standing, that wishes to stand out above others, a “breakthrough moment” is not just something that is wished for; it’s something that is depended on for the very survival of the business. With offices in Nashville and Montgomery, Pfeffer Torode Architecture is a quickly-expanding and innovative architectural design firm that got its start in 2009. In the summer of 2012, it experienced its “breakthrough moment” that changed not only the course of the company, but also the landscape of Alabama and Tennessee. The breakthrough moment that led to its current success and wide-reaching recognition came when the firm sought a new approach to architecture, an approach that has become its routine. From the beginning, the Pfeffer Torode team pursued opportunities to create a splash of color in an industry that can sometimes be plastered with black and white. Though they didn’t know this project would be their breakthrough moment, in 2012 they ran across a most unexpected opportunity: a treehouse-building competition for a summer exhibition at a local botanical garden. They were ecstatic about the chance to display their creativity in this one-of-a-kind environment. As a newer firm, they had nothing to lose, and as they would soon learn, so much to gain. Due to the founders’ strong competitive nature, the small team had worked tirelessly on two literary-inspired tree house designs. “One of our all-time favorites was the Walden Tree House. We drew all of our inspiration from Henry David Thoreau’s cabin near Walden Pond,” says Jonathan, a Partner. The main aspect of the Walden Tree House is a spiral staircase that wraps around the tree and leads up to the house. Their tree house was also built with interaction in mind, which led to the architects including swings, a balcony, birdhouse, and rain chain. The Pfeffer Torode team also chose to follow Thoreau’s lead and source all materials from nearby Amish mills, or from sassafras and cedar root from around Arrington, Tennessee. Both of their designs ended up winning the tree house competition and allowed the firm to make its mark on one of Nashville’s most beautiful examples of Southern design: Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. Overnight, this startup design firm of talented architects gained notoriety all over the metro area and basked in the excitement of this important, defining breakthrough. “It was really incredible. Here we are, this small boutique design firm, and now suddenly we’re on billboards all across Nashville,” says Jamie Pfeffer, Partner and Nashville native. After the competition, Pfeffer Torode decided to donate the Walden Tree House to Cheekwood Gardens in a fundraising auction. Unexpectedly, an anonymous donor bought it for over $40,000, and then donated it right back to Cheekwood, which has made the tree house the longest summer feature to date. When the Pfeffer Torode team is not participating in unique, innovative tree house competitions, you can find them designing anything from stunning lake houses to atypical pool houses to observation towers or even party barns. Their knack for uncommon ancillary structures and beauty inserted in the everyday home is what appeals to their clients from all over the South. “We love being invited to practice any sort of style that we would need to. Being a young firm, we have to be a bit more flexible, but we’ve been lucky to have some more modern, unusual designs. I think what has come out of that is that we have a much more eclectic, diverse style,” says Scott, a Partner. The characteristics of the South shine when people see Pfeffer Torode’s designs. The firm varies on style and approach but still makes structures respond to the environment by basing many designs on experiences within Southern homes. With all three of the Partners being raised in the South, one can see the Southern inspiration in their works, even with the creative twists in their approach. “What influences us is our history and there is so much history in the South. We have seen prosperity and poverty. We’ve seen the South’s contrasts between old and new. In the South you could have your roof coming off but your silver is polished. We’re comfortable with the contrasts of the South and enjoy adding them to our designs.”
the longer I'm studying interior design, the more I believe that wainscoting, and applied wall mouldings, are the key to beautiful rooms.
The Pantry cupboards are made from solid pine and can be painted in any colour. Our painted furniture can be painted in your choice of colour from the Farrow and Ball, Little Greene Paint company or Fired Earth ranges. The Split version of the 1500mm Pantry has a pine top to the base section as standard, this can be changed to hardwood or stone if you prefer, at an additional cost. Behind the doors of the upper section we can include spice racks, or if you prefer, omit them to allow you to have deeper shelves. We normally add spice racks to pair of doors and leave other pair with deeper shelves behind. The first three pictures show the 1500mm wide standard design pantry. The price in this listing is for the standard two door spice rack and two door deep shelves in the upper section, with three central drawers and four doors in the base section. As you will see in the rest of the images we can change the door style to the Shaker style and alter the paint colour and knobs. The upper doors can also be glazed and we can adjust the design to add additional drawers. With this style we can increase or decrease the width of the pantry and add drawers and doors as required. Please email me with details for a price as required. Some of the photographs show wider pantries at 1800mm and 2000mm wide and also narrower pantries at 1200mm wide. For variations on this please email me for a price. The pantry will arrive via kerbside courier on two separate pallets and will require you to carry in both sections and lift the top onto the base.
