I mean doesn't it mean the student is participating and trying to learn? Why is it a bad thing? However,

If you choose to do "Featured Author" in your classroom, don't limit yourself to just one book! For example, Mo Willems create many, many, many books that children love. I encourage you to use them all! This product allows you to do just that as you can CUSTOMIZE the writing prompts to meet the needs of their students. Do you want to write about Elephant and Piggie? A worksheet to assist students in making meaning from the authors words in poetry. How to use this worksheet In the column under the heading “what the author wrote” pick some key sentences from a poem (in particular those that use poetic language in which the author does not directly say what is intended – similies, metaphor, personification etc), write these into the boxes underneath. In the column “What I think the author meant” students must write what they think that sentence means. Differentiation To differentiate allow lower ability students to draw what they envision when they hear that line in the poem and allow higher ability student to complete the sentences you choose and then choose their own sentences (this extends their thinking by making them search for poetic language and recognise when the author is not directly saying what they mean). ***************************************************************************** If you like this resource you might appreciate these great Grade 1 literacy resources >Words and Non Words - A Phonics Activity >Contractions Matching Turtles >Story Prompts for Grade 1 ***************************************************************************** Customer Tips: How to get TPT credit to use on future purchases: Please go to your My Purchases page (you may need to login). After I have spent a few lessons teaching imagery, I LOVE to create examples of imagery with the free paint chips that you can nab at any home-improvement store! I used it as our routine activity between lessons for grades 2-5. Once students get the hang of it, one round of the game can take less than 5 minutes. Once a student yells "SCATTERGORIES", I would make everyone put their pencil down and that person would have to stand up and reveal their answers in each category to confirm their win. I would often reward winners with stickers, treats and small prizes. You can also use this game to spark dialogue within the classroom. Ask other students to confirm the people, places, songs, movies, books, authors, etc. mentioned by their classmates. If few students know very much about the given responses, it's a great opportunity for the student who selected that answer to teach his/her classmates about that particular person, place, object etc. ______________________ For the best results, please select the "Fit to Printable Area“ or "Fit to Printer Margins“ options in settings before printing. ______ Hope this helps and please leave feedback! =) Scattergories: Creative Thinking Game for Classroom Fun by Felisa Williams is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

This is a set of 36 synonym task cards. Each card has a book title on it with one of the words underlined. Students need to use their thesaurus to look up a synonym for the underlined word. The student will then write the underlined word and the new synonym on their recording sheet. The cards are not numbered so you can choose which cards you want to use. There are 3 recording sheets included (but no answer key since there are many possible answers). These task cards can be used in a variety of ways. You can use them as a center activity, a partner activity, in small groups, as a scoot game, whole-class instruction, practice and review or for fast finishers. They can be used in a classroom or a library setting. A thesaurus will be needed to use these cards. **This product is included in my Reference Book Task Cards Bundle. Dictionary and guide word worksheets and printables. Review dictionary and guide word skills with your students using these worksheets. There are 13 worksheets total. Only 2 of the worksheets require students to use their own dictionary to answer the questions. For the last worksheet students are asked to look up a specific word and then answer a question about that word. I did use the newest Scholastic Children's Dictionary to create these questions and tried to choose words that I thought would be in most dictionaries. The preview does show all of the pages. While some teachers use a literature anthology and some teachers are able to choose all of their own texts, we are all teaching the same literary elements. This #2ndaryELA Twitter chat was all about teaching literature skills. Middle school and high school English Language Arts teachers discussed the specific skills they focus on when teaching literature. Teachers also shared where and how they find the texts to match the skills they are teaching. Read through the chat for ideas to implement in your own classroom.
