As a mother of 7, we've tried it all for keeping our teenagers engaged and loving General Conference. Nothing has worked better than this!
We’ve all been there. The dreaded moment when you somehow are supposed to magically conjure up months of weekly activities that will uplift, inspire, engage, and dazzle a group teen girls with diverse backgrounds and interests for Young Women’s. Let’s start with the goodness. We’ve polled thousands of former young women and young women leaders and compiled the most extensive modern list of ideas for Young Women’s activities available. Before we dive in, we do need to have a little heart to heart. In the past, it wasn't uncommon for a majority of activities to center on motherhood and being a wife. While these are important things they may not always be age appropriate or even universally applicable to all young women. It is important to remember that young women are children. Encouraging children to focus on marriage, weddings, and childbearing puts unhealthy pressure on girls, can be limiting, exclusionary, and can give off weird child-bride vibes. There is not a girl in the church who doesn’t understand the important role marriage and children play in the Church and the Gospel. We would argue that there are far more girls who lack understanding of how to value themselves as individuals without the relationships of wife and mother. The truth is, more and more of our young women will grow up and not marry right out of the gate. Not only is that ok, it’s actually really healthy. Many will not be able to or choose not to have children. A good portion of them will experience divorce. What we don’t want is for these young women to be scrambling to understand their worth as individuals because we only prepared them for how to live the gospel within one specific life experience context. What’s the solution? Focus more on principles and less on specific applications. Our young women are very smart. If we focus on helping them learn the principles of the gospel, they will be able to figure out how to apply it to their own lives, progress, and growth. No matter what their lives may look like. Our goal here is to help prepare young women for whatever their Heavenly Parent’s unique plan has in store for them. This list is packed full of activity ideas that will stretch, educated, prepare, inspire, engage, and strengthen young women. Not to mention, have some fun. Above all, remember that young women are still kids. Having fun is not only incredibly healthy, but crucial to their development. Life Skills: Stock market 101: The key here is to help girls understand why this is important for their future. Understanding investing basics are key to being a financially independent adult. Credit and credit scores 101: Teach the importance of having and managing a credit card. It’s common for LDS youth to fear any type of debit or credit card. Help them understand how to use and pay off a credit card each month so they can make important future purchases like cars and homes. Learn about 401Ks and savings Understanding or communicating boundaries: Have a trusted local therapist teach the girls the importance of respecting their own boundaries. Cars 101: How to change a tire, check the oil, and change a cabin air filter. Help them understand what each of these things should typically cost and how often they should do them. How to create and follow a basic budget to reach financial goals. Get first aid and get CPR certified. Don’t forget to review baby and pet CPR. Learn how to start a fire, set up a tent, and make a simple camping meal. Camping is such a fun hobby for many young adults, but the first adventure can be intimidating. Practicing in a safe environment helps make future adventures so much easier. Easy recipes and cooking basics. Remember the goal here is useful life training. Not how to be a future mommy or wife. All young women will need to know how to healthy feed themselves. Not all young women will be wives and/or moms. Learn about self defense and safety tips. A routine review of basic self defense and personal safety precautions can be a matter of life and death. Learn about preparedness and 72 hour kits Great Outdoors: Scavenger hunt around the neighborhood Go swimming Go camping and learn to set up a tent Rock climbing / Rappelling Go on a bike ride Gardening. How to create and grow a small herb garden. Then maybe learn how to use those herbs to make fun drinks or treats. Nature walk Go paddle boarding Picnic at a park Have a backyard BBQ + s'mores White water rafting or tubing Snow tubing Ice skating FUN: Karaoke night Sodalicious + game night Go bowling Pizza night Lazer tag Outdoor movie night Talent show Board game night Go to a local play Go roller skating Creative: Arrange a floral bouquet & deliver it to an elderly women in the neighborhood Book club Cupcake wars Drawing / paint class Wood working intro Poetry writing class Photography class Make an art collage Tie dye shirts Paint a mural Shrinky Dinks Decorate canvas totes Sports: Volleyball Yoga Pickleball Batting cages Kickball Nerf war Zumba Golf Spin class Service: Make fleece blankets for local refugees Go to the local food bank Yard work Serve food at a local shelter Write letters to people in the ward Service scavenger hunt Visit a retirement home Decorate cookies and give them to families in the ward Educational: Tour a local college Tour a local business. Learn what it is like to work there. What do they look for in employees? How did they get started? What is it like to run a business? Visit a local art museum Bring your HW and get some help! Heathy study habits Career night (learn from women who have careers in what the girls are interested in) How to write a resume Stargazing and learning about astronomy Learn the basics of coding Language and culture night Go to the capital during legislation Learn about entrepreneurship College scholarships Personal care + Relationships: Attending the YW’s extracurricular activities Learn about how to have healthy relationships with friends and family Spa night Learn about personal hygiene How to meditate Learn ways to manage anxiety Learning about body neutrality Dating safety and consent Learn about setting goals Spa night / self care / self love Personality quiz night Spiritual: Paint flowers at the temple grounds Learn about the temple endowment Charades with Book of Mormon stories Finding ancestor names to take to the temple Temple tour and picnic Have poetry night and talk about Heavenly Mother. You can find great resources here.
5 Youth Group Activities with a Message. Includes what you'll need, instructions, debrief questions, and teaching suggestions.
mutual last week was such a party omigosh!🥳😂 hahaha ok, for the LONGEST time our mutual activities were not the greatest. My silence about them on the blog pretty much might have been me saying "uh, yeah, there was pretty much nothing to blog about without ranting" but finally, an amazing activity has occurred. But this activity didn't just fall out of the sky. We did have to do a lot of planning and work in advance, but finally, we were able to hold such an amazing and unifying activity. I won't go into specifics about our ward, but I'm a Young Woman, I've visited lots of wards, I'm in one, and I think soooo many of us are longing for more unity. I see this as the Lord has prompted revelation, and we saw President Nelson delegate the announcement of "bye-bye" to Beehives, Mia Maids,+Laurels to Sister Cordon. All of these inspired changes are amazing. And in my completely biased opinion, this activity is amazing! But, there is no one-time fix where everyone starts holding hands, singing kum ba yah, and never is cliqueish again. The perfect YW group wasn't built in a day! If I claimed this packet solved everything, maybe I'd be a better marketer but I'd be a liar as well. Even though I won't claim that with the purchase of this amazing activity, all about unity, and diversity, every issue will be gone, I will honestly say that doing this activity was a great step on the path to unity. Aaagh, I'm sorry, and I hope y'all don't think I'm just riding on the tail of the buzzword, but I have to keep saying it because in honesty, that's what this activity is about! The outline of this is for the Young Women to learn about themselves and others, notice the differences between themselves and others, and celebrate them. One of the steps in this was the Princess Posters. No one's unique personality can ever be captured in the Myers-Briggs 4 letters, but it's an easy way to talk about the different types of people in the world. So, I made a Princess poster for each one. All of these princesses are so fun and amazing, and that's the point. There simply isn't a bad personality type. I know it's a lil hard to see; I apologize, but do you see this in all its glory? We had so much fun taking Post-It notes and slapping them under our personality types and it was so eye-opening to see the diversity (or lack thereof hehehehe) of personalities in the group. We had 1 Campaigner, 1 Adventurer, 1 Architect, 2 Advocates....and everyone else was a Defender! Additionally, we rounded up and planned a bunch of activities to go with the results of the personality tests. There's enough to get you through the 1-hour block of "youth activity night" (still shaking off the death of mutual😂) but not so much that you get overwhelmed. There's scenario cards about certain church situations -- lessons, activities, dances, girls camp, and more. All these questions are designed to help you learn more about the YW and what makes them tick, especially in certain situations. We had some good discussions on those. Others involve talking & learning about others, walking around the room, and really, there's just a lot of good lessons to be learned from this. One of this was that I was so surprised when my close friend slapped her Post-It under Introvert. We're opposites, it seems like, and she is super outgoing, and I just assumed she would be an Extravert. Maybe she answered some questions wrong, I thought to myself. Everyone else in the group continued talking about their results, how accurate they seemed to be, etc, and then one of my leaders said, "I was shocked that YOU weren't an extravert." I was shocked at her shock tbh hahahaha, and then I realized that if my leader could be so wrong about my true personality, then of course I may be prone to misjudge what others are really like. This was just one lesson that I learned, but there are really so many more opportunities to discover these types of things in this activity. You can check out this activity packet on my Etsy shop and grab it for only $3.99. We spent a few weeks planning and creating the material, so y'all can know you're getting the maximum value with your purchase. If you're wanting to support the blog & what we do for free, be sure to favorite the shop on Etsy or follow us on Pinterest. And don't worry -- there are tons more mutual ideas (dang it I said it again!) freebies on the blog, which you can find the biggest comprehensive list of here. That was just so fun to create & host, and I'm beyond excited to share it with the world.

Young Women Conducting Sheet, Easy to download! Use today. Made for LDS Young Women Classes.
Coming from a young woman herself, opening exercises can be pretty stressful. When you ask someone to say a prayer, and they're just like, "no," like it's a huge thing you're asking of them and that doing so would cost them their lives, it kind of ticks me off a bit. But as everyone learns, grows, and matures, things can go more smoothly. Here are five tips for making your opening exercises go better. 1. Use this conducting outline. Make sure there are always plenty of copies in the Young Womens room, and printing them out on colored paper might spice them up a little bit. 2. Be a good example. Whenever you maybe asked do to something, respond with an enthusiastic 'yes.' 3. Make sure everyone has a chance to conduct. Say one day Mary is conducting. She asks EVERY ONE (of the young women, the leaders are lovely, of course) and they (including Sally) all respond with a clipped 'no.' (And yes, the tone in which they say it makes it way more annoying.) Next week, Sally has to conduct and has the same dilemma. She'll be more likely to accept next time, now that she knows how it feels to be conducting. 4. Tell the young women about this problem! Here are some tips to explain to them during a mini lesson about the topic, taken from lds.org: Arrive early and make sure everything is ready for the meeting. When possible, make assignments ahead of time, including opening and closing prayers. Conduct with reverence as guided by the Spirit. Leaders always teach by example. Use a written agenda that outlines events to take place in the meeting. The person conducting announces who will pray, speak, lead the music, and do other things. Choose music that invites the Spirit. See that the music director and accompanist are prepared. Where appropriate, arrange for prelude music to be played before the meeting starts. Be efficient and aware of time limits. And if ALL else fails... 5. Make a prayer wheel for Young Womens. (Make a circle with all of the young womens' names. Make an identical circle with a cutout the same size as each name. Secure with a pushpin and spin. If you're feeling extra, you could make an extra cool spinner like in carnivals.) Bonus: Please, don't do the "pray so you get a hot husband" thing (especially when the bishop is visiting.) Good luck! Molly Mormon
