Zalipie Poland's Painted Village
carol left a nice comment on the first peony versal, so this is a thank you to her. i used a nicer envelope and spent a little more time on it. it's mesmerizing to make random flowery patterns. then i saw this lady on Pinterest and i can see myself heading in that direction. a couple other photos may be viewed here. http://www.folklorweb.cz/clanky/20070521.php if you checked the blog early yesterday, you might have missed my bonus post (below this one) and the photo of all the great mail that i received over the past few days. thanks again to my penpals.

Zalipie, Poland
Many of you might’ve already heard about Zalipie, a small village in southern Poland where an old custom still survives nowadays: houses are decorated in rich flowery patterns both on the ins…
No matter your age, you're never too young or old to add beauty to our world.
This uber-quaint Polish village is known for its habit of painting elaborate floral motifs on just about everything.
"I try to help decorate the world a bit," says Anežka Kašpárková (Agnes Kasparkova), a 91 year old granny, or babička as she would be called in Czech.
Once upon a time, in a small Polish village called Zalipie, somebody painted a flower on their ceiling in order to cover up a soot mark caused by the stove. Ventilation was poor back then, and soot stains were a common sight in most if not all of the houses, and so other people started concealing the marks with their own little flowers until every house was covered in them.
For the townsfolk of Zalipie, every day is a celebration since the isolated outpost blossomed into one of Poland's most iconic villages.

Zalipie, Poland's painted village near Kraków, where almost all buildings are painted with flowers in a naïve folk art style.
