Normally I wouldn't consider myself a buttress man, but flying buttresses get me every time. These sexy copper-topped flying buttresses are best seen about half-way up the spiraly climb to the top of the Strasbourg Cathedral's rooftop viewing platform. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Aachen Cathedral, frequently referred to as the "Imperial Cathedral",is a Roman Catholic church in Aachen, Germany (UNESCO WHS)
Throughout history vaulted ceilings were used to ornament cathedrals and basilicas and make a space look larger than it is. In architecture, the main function of vaults was to give resistance to walls and ceilings. There’s a wide variety of vaults such as the Barrel Vault, Groin Vault, Rib Vault and Fan vault. This variety took ceilings to another dimension and more than art covering four walls with a roof. Therefore, Mozaico thought of taking you on a journey of renowned to less known monuments , spreading through three continents and two thousand years of history. We start with the contemporary art of magical stained glass ceilings made by Daniel Buren to conclude with the fairy land of India, the Taj Mahal.

The Venerable Bede’s bones have been in Durham Cathedral since 1022. They were brought from Jarrow by a monk called Alfred who had them buried alongside Cuthbert’s relics, where they remained until they were moved to the Cathedral’s Galilee Chapel in the 14th century. The relics of St Bede still rest in that chapel, albeit in a tomb dating from 1831. The Galilee Chapel can be clearly seen in the photo above, a Gothic structure with windows all around, attached to the great west end of Durham Cathedral. Today, 25 May, is the feast of St Bede. My sermon for today can be read here.
Copyright © Robert Vardigans 2009 The sun came out stronger, giving more contrast and depth to the picture. I found this interesting angle looking over wall, with the archway building the composition. I feel this picture looks much more real and less wedding cakey even without the rich blue sky and white fluffy clouds! Explore No 51 - Highest position: 443 on Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Gothic fan vaults designed between 1351 and 1370. The floor is covered in tombstones, whose inscriptions are more or less faded from centuries of people stepping on them. The composition is not perfect, it might be better if the door was lower down in the frame but I wanted to keep the first stone as the writing and pattern is beautiful

[Wikipedia] It is a really tight stair case. And when I was finally up there I had to catch my breath to keep the camera steady. Shooting upwards did not help either. This shot was not easy and I am surprised it came out this good. Take a look at my "HDR Cookbook"! It contains some more information on my techniques.
