Seudónimos: Barfredo de Bologna, Giustin de Budiana. Pintor, grabador e ilustrador. Empleado en la Cassa di Risparmio, en Bolonia, Baruffi asimiló una cultura artística autónoma y moderna, a través de las propuestas innovadoras de las revistas europeas y sus asiduas concurrencias al medio artístico del Palazzo Bentivoglio de Bolonia, donde estudia desde 1897. Pintor, grabador, decorador e ilustrador Protagonista del arte italiano del Idealismo y el Simbolismo, De Carolis ha influido de manera determinante en el desarrollo del gusto floral, trabajando con la misma intensidad en el campo de la ilustración, de la pintura y de la fotografía. Aunque resulte problemática su ubicación en el Liberty, movimiento en el cual suele colocarlo la crítica. Su fe artística en la tradición renacentista, se contrapone a los atrevimientos del arte nuevo, como aparece en un artículo sobre Leonardo luego de una visita a la Exposición Internacional de Arte Decorativa Moderna en Torino, en 1902. Su obra exhibe, de todos modos, una evolución de la estética Prerrafaelita, fuertemente condicionada por los modelos y estilos japonizantes, por un lado, y por un inquieto formalismo de estilo miguelangelesco, por el otro. De Carolis ha colaborado con grandes literatos, ilustrando con sus diseños y xilografías las obras de Gabriele D'Annunzio y de Giovanni Pascoli, con un estilo gráfico inconfundible, decorativamente orgánico tanto en la arquitectura tipográfico como en el contenido. Se graduó en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Bologna en 1892, luego se trasladó a Roma, donde asistió durante tres años, a la escuela de pintura decorativa del Museo Artístico Industriale. Natura cosi mi dispone Adolfo De Karolis para la Compañia Dramática de Eleonora Duse En Roma conoce al pintor Nino Costa y comienza a frecuentar el cenáculo fundado por él In Arte Libertas, que proponía una renovación aristocrática del arte a través del redescubrimiento del Quatrocento Fiorentino. Hacia finales de 1901, su vena simbolista lo devuelve a la pintura de paisaje en témpera y óleo, a la pintura mural decorativa y al diseño derivado del Arts and Crafts. En 1896 integra al Asociación de Artes y Letras, en esta época son sus pinturas de inspiración prerrafaelita. En 1899 es invitado a la Exposición Internacional de Arte de Venecia. En 1900 conoce a Giovanni Pascoli y se ocupa del diseño gráfico de algunas de sus publicaciones. Ese mismo año, la Academia de Bellas Artes de Perugia lo nombra académico meritorio. En 1901 obtiene el cargo de profesor en la cátedra de Ornamento de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Florencia y participa en un concurso para la ilustración de una lujosa reedición de la Divina Comedia. De aquí en más, De Carolis inicia una vasta producción artística, unida a colaboración y creación de revistas literarias como Leonardo, Hermes, Rivista Marchigiana Ilustrata, Novissima y otras, frecuentando a los mayores literatos y artistas de la época. Siguen años de intensa labor en el campo de la decoración y la ilustración. En 1909 trabaja para D'Annunzio, diseñando la edición de la tragedia Fedra, con un estilo arcaizante y simbolista. De Carolis lleva a la xilografía los célebres lemas dannunzianos, frases breves creadas por el poeta, las que utiliza para su serie de ex libris para personajes famosos. A sugerencia de su amigo D'Annunzio, De Carolis comienza a firmar como Karolis o De Karolis muchísimas de sus ilustraciones para libros. En 1912, en la Exposición Retrospectiva Italiana, realizada en Florencia recibe, de la Cámara de Comercio y Arte, una Medalla de Oro. En 1914 realiza, para Formiggini, cuarenta y un xilografías para la serie de cartas de juego italianas. Por esos años también colabora con la revista L'Eroica. Luego de la Primera Guerra Mundial, De Carolis se traslada a Roma, donde diseña diplomas y medallas para el Ministerio de Guerra.
