About The Artwork Teenage girl groomed according to rituals marking her passage to womanhood. The Yanomami Indians are regarded to be the last stone age people residing in the Amazon rainforest. They are the last human remnant of the noble savage, the natural ecologist who lived at peace in nature in an enlightened unity with all of creation. The land and the delicate ecological balance of the rainforest where they have been living for millennia have been jeopardized by the rapid encroachment of Westerners. Because of the mahogany and the strategic minerals abundant in the area, the Yanomami people have become pawns in high-stakes international games of resource protection and acquisition while deforestation, disease and assimilation reduce them to the state of semi urbanized impoverishment that other indigenous groups in the Amazon basin have experienced. This repertoire of images is an excerpt from my project on the Yanomami Indians in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest in the making since 1995. Photographic records of the Yanomami Indians are important to preserve for our children, the knowledge of one of the last Neolithic tribes in the world. I sell my work on this site in order to fund my project. Giclée print using pigment-based inks with archival substrates on fine art archival Hahnemühle paper. By Jake Fitisemanu Jnr. There was once a taupou named Vītaliutaolepaepae(1), the daughter of orator chief ‘Ulu(2) who lived in Puipa‘a village, Faleata district, ‘Upolu island. Vī was renowned throughout the islands for her beauty -- especially her wavy, brown hair -- of which she was extremely proud and boastful. Her pretty friends (also the daughters of chiefs) were just as conceited and self-centered, and they relentlessly teased all the other girls in the village. After years of hearing the villagers complain about his daughterʻs bullying, chief ʻUlu had had enough of her childish ways.
