I open this topic to share all of my photos that I took when I go to forest to see orchid. A part from native orchids in the forest I also will show...
Discovered by western science in 1885, Paphiopedilum sanderianum is perhaps one of the most interesting and beautiful flowers in the plant kingdom. This species, soon after it's discovery, was lost to science until its rediscovery in 1978 in the remote jungle of north Borneo. This species is restricted to the region of Mulu National Park. Paphiopedilum sanderianum in bloom is spectacular. The reason for natural selection of the meter long lateral petals is unknown to science at this time. Much speculation about a pathway for potential pollinators or another insect association has been proposed. Technically, flowers of this species are the largest flower in the world as the two lateral petals and the lip comprise 2+ meters in diameter. The ecology of this species is also quite interesting. Paphiopedilum sanderianum is a lithophyte and of the Borneo Pahphiopedilum grows more like a cactus or succulent than an orchid. Interestingly, after observing multiple populations of this species within its range, despite the presence of many extremely large and suspected old mature plants, blooming is quite sporadic and very unpredictable. The leaves of several plants in this series are approximately 0.6m in length. The photos in this series represent three visits to multiple habitats with blooming observed only twice, and on one of those visits only a single blooming plant among hundreds of mature plants. To me, this plant in bloom is unmatched among all orchids. Fortunately multiple locations are quite remote and generally well protected, though this species has historically endured heavy collection pressure from plant poachers.
