The argentinean architect Ana Mitrano recently builds these organic chairs and furniture complete with uniquely shaped pieces from recovered cardboard. The designer created a variety of pieces to furnish an entire space including a rocking chair, a series of low-rise seats, coffee tables and footrests. The furniture is made with special cardboard plates assembled and pressed. The strength allowed over a hundred kilos. They are ergonomic, lightweight and can be natural or painted according to the environment that will integrate color. Pet furniture is typically tasteless and tacky: cheesy prints, strange shapes, unfortunate materials. And nothing ruins the aesthetic of a well-appointed powder room quite like a cheap plastic litter box—every one is an eyesore.

OneTwenty Modern is a high-end furniture and design store on Lower Ossington. The smallish space is a fun journey into the world of eclectic decor, designer collections and fascinating pieces of furniture - most of which are, of course, functional - but style comfortably sits side-by-side with functionality at OneTwenty Modern. The first thing anyone would notice is a bright pink, cotton string armchair. It looks like a giant net, but is in fact a Fernando and Humberto Campana designed Vermelha chair with pink ropes intertwined with each other and the steel frame, lending the entire piece an air of an animated net or basket. The piece retails for $11,678, but ignoring the price point, the mind races to how spectacularly that chair would dominate (in a good way) any space or room.Another piece that I'm sure would catch anyone's eye is a large Valentina four-door cabinet. With highly polished laquer, the cabinet ($6,982) is covered in a bright oversized Italian comic strip. They don't make bigger conversation pieces than cabinets with Italian comic strips on them.Originality and daring ideas flow through almost every piece at OneTwenty Modern. Another standout piece is a set of Frank Gehry designed corrugated cardboard side tables (20 x 20 ¾ x 17) these nesting tables would lend any space a generous hint of whimsy. I don't like furniture that doesn't do anything, so it's refreshing to see such high-end pieces that still have a job to do. In the case of the side tables, it's a $2,349 job.OneTwenty Modern also has a large variety of tables, paper suspension lamps, dining chairs and rugs to serve any design style. One of my favourites is the Noguchi Replica end tables by Modernica. Now, I was never good at looking at a piece of furniture (or art) and being able to wax on about the piece's influences or style. So, I will have to take OneTwenty Modern's word that the end tables are inspired by Isamu Noguchi. At 20" high and with a 24" diameter top, the stem of the table is chrome plated and criss-crossed in the same unusual way as the cotton string armchair. Shoppers can select a black or white laminate top ($429), maple top ($558) or a walnut top ($615). The price points at OneTwenty Modern aren't for everyone (myself included), but I like the fact that if I had the funds, then I wouldn't feel like I'm throwing my money away down some self-indulgent hole in the name of style or design. It seems every piece in this showroom is a solid and substantial piece that could suit nearly every home or lifestyle. Making a purchase here might not be an option for me yet, but it's definitely made it into my mental bookmarks of places where "future James" will come and shop. Photos by Dennis Marciniak
