"Tension is a material property that creates both music and architecture", says designer Lihan Jin, alluding to their concert hall's unique facade. Architecture is often referred to as 'frozen music' - a term that pretty much describes the Tension Instrument Concert Hall's unique, eye-catching design. When you look at Monica Rohan’s paintings made of coloured vortices and female bodies with heads hidden in swirling patterns, the first impression is an undefinable attraction to what seems to be a warm and cozy cache. Then you see that bodies, most of them self-portraits, are not just hiding themselves, but they’re falling, floating,

Based in Seoul, Korea, Kyuin Shim is a digital artist and sculptor who executes dark and poignant visions by altering the human body. His latest sculptural series "Black Black" features several monochromatic renditions of mannequin-like figures whose bodies seem to disintegrate before one's eyes. In Korean, the title of the series has two meanings: "Black" and "Sound of Crying." The characters' flesh becomes consumed by bubbling matter that eventually turns into a downpour of water from their limbs and orifices. A recent series of digital 3D renderings, "Small Place," similarly abstracts the human body, this time in all white. Featuring different groupings of feet sticking out from under a cubicle-like prism, the piece evokes the smothering closeness of an unhealthy relationship. Take a look at some of Shim's work below.

Peter Gentenaar, a paper artist based in the Netherlands, creates ethereal, large-scale sculptures of organic shapes that float in mid-air as they hang from the ceilings. Some look like aquatic plant life while others resemble the qualities of bright, delicate spring flowers. Gentenaar's craft evolved from his love for paper, a passion he acquired from the many years he spent working in a printmaking shop. His unusual, stunning work defies conventional thinking regarding paper's colloquial, everyday use. Read more after the jump.
In most science fiction stories, the future world is designed to be a hardy and geometric place, able to withstand nuclear disaster and protect its inhabitants, who are probably less concerned about the beauty of their surroundings. South Korean artist Lee Bul's haunting suspended sculptures seem to defy this design sensibility by interpreting future worlds in a beautiful way.

Architecture is meant to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. When you look at a structure, you can distinguish these two ends but they cannot be separated, and the relative weight each of them carry can vary widely. Plus, every society has its own, unique relationship to the natural world and its architecture usually reflects that as well, allowing people from other places to learn about their environment, as well as history, ceremonies, artistic sensibility, and many aspects of daily life.
