created by Shinya Kimura, one of the champions of ‘Zero Style’ - minimal interpretations of vintage motorcycles, with low-key paintjobs and refined rawness in engineering. Kimura set up Zero Engineering in Japan in 1992, but now runs Chabott Engineering in Azusa, California. Like Chicara Nagata, Kimura is treating the motorcycle as art, and the approach is paying off. There’s a Jules Verne, steampunk tinge to his works that we love. http://www.chabottengineering.com

Shinya Kimura is an artist. And his art is the motorcycle. Though a legend in Japan for some time now, the motorcycle engineer first came into the American public eye as a contestant on Biker Build-Off, a Discovery Channel channel show featuring custom bike builders. Kimura has been accredited with originating the popular, vintage style trend of customized bike building (think Pimp My Ride meets retro Harley Davidson).

Shinya Kimura, a great artist in building custom motorcycles. I like him because he build his bike with sculpturally design and yet functional. He is the founder of Zero Engineering and later had launched his own workshop Chabott Engineering. He's in the industry for 25 years and had won various awards. Shinya Kimura is one of the most enigmatic custom motorcycle builders working today. His bikes have zero respect for conventional styles, prevailing trends or the laws of symmetry, and are instantly recognizable by their organic shapes. But how does that approach gel with BMW's monstrous retro cruiser, the R18? To answer that question, BMW Motorrad commissioned Shinya Kimura to build the third officially sanctioned BMW R18 custom. The Japanese builder responded with a brutal and quirky take on the 1,802 cc boxer, nicknamed 'The Wal.' Kimura-san kicked the project off with a visit to Germany, to meet the R18's development

EXCLUSIVE Shinya Kimura is probably the world's most famous custom motorcycle builder right now. But despite this fame, he's a somewhat enigmatic figure. He studied insects at college, but chose motorcycle mechanics as a career. It was a smart move: he quickly shot to fame in the 90s building 'samurai choppers' at Zero Engineering, a company he founded with backing from the aftermarket parts giant Plot Inc. Several hundred low-ridin' choppers later, Shinya Kimura left Zero, left Japan, and moved to the small town of Azusa in California. In 2006 he set up Chabott Engineering and now builds three or
