The octagonal spire of the Tolbooth Kirk, just catching the last of the sunlight, is the tallest in the city, at 74m. The gothic church was designed by Pugin and J.G. Graham and built 1842-1844 as Victoria Hall, the headquarters of the Church of Scotland's General Assembly. Renamed the Highland Tolbooth (St John’s) Church (or some variant thereof; I can't find anything definitive) in 1956, the kirk closed in 1984, but the Grade A Listed building reopened in 1999 as 'The Hub', a Festival venue. As the sign indicates, the 19th Century Camera Obscura is on the left, in Outlook Tower. The old Castlehill School, now a whisky heritage centre, is on the right, behind scaffolding.
