In the final battle at the Hill Cumorah, the Lamanites killed roughly 230,000 Nephites. This number may, at first, seem impossibly large. However, this could be explained in a few ways: 1. Ancient texts often exaggerate numbers. 2. “Ten thousand” might represent a military unit and not an exact number of soldiers. 3. These figures might be accurate. It is even possible that most of the Nephite population, men, women and children, fought in this battle and were killed. Accepting that there are sometimes different possible explanations to the same question, as in this case, can be helpful to readers of the Book of Mormon today.
