It is closely related to North Indian languages derived from Sanskrit, specially Hindi. The author of this book is a Sinhala mother tongue speaker, who has thoroughly mastered the structure of the Sinhala language. The author is a B.Sc. (Physical Sciences) and M.A. (Linguistics) degree holder of the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. In all he has written and published six elaborate and extensive books (ranging from 633 to 1200 A5 pages) in Sinhala, Tamil and English, to learn Sinhala, Tamil, English, Hindi and Urdu. The grammatical structure of the Sinhala language is simple. The author is of the opinion that, next to English it is the second language that is easy to master, compared with other languages in the world. The proof of this statement is evident from the fact that an average person from China, Hungary, Russia or from any other country in the world can master the structure of the Sinhala language in just 3 months, and can speak it fluently. When you want to learn any language you should know its letters or the script, writing a language in the letters of your language is not a proper method. For this reason this book starts its first lesson with the introduction of the Sinhala script. A specially designed phonetic alphabet shows very clearly, very correctly and unambiguously the pronunciation of all the Sinhala words printed in this book. This book presents the Sinhala grammar in well - prepared and graded steps from lesson 3 to lesson 29. After each lesson there is an exercise, the answers of which are given at the end of the book. A very remarkable feature of this book is that the author has presented a list of all the Sinhala verb groups with all of their participle forms. This verb list will no doubt be of immense use to scholars who wish to do research in this language. Another special feature of this book is that it presents a Sinhalese - English mini-dictionary and an English - Sinhalese mini-dictionary at the end of the book. Any foreign student who studies the Sinhalese language through this book will surely attain a high degree of proficiency to read, write and speak the Sinhalese language.
