This book introduces readers to the Evolution of Societies in Uganda. It mainly covers early migration and settlement patterns of some groups of people in Uganda. The book explains how the current settlement patterns in Uganda were partly influenced by early migrations. Some of the groups that migrated into Uganda include the Bantu and the Nilotes. Prior to these migrations, other groups of people belonging to the Bushmanoid race already existed on the African continent. The book further expounds on Pre-Colonial state formation, early internal and external contacts of different communities and also looks at Colonial Administration in Uganda. The book is therefore an important text for readers who are desirous of understanding the early political history of Uganda.

Kwandhula is an elaborate introduction ceremony of a husband to the wife's family, among the Basoga and Baganda of Uganda. This book presents an ethnography of the rapidly changing institution of marriage among two of the largest nationalities found in Uganda. The introduction of modernizing influences more than a century ago has resulted in changing many aspects of the way people lead their lives. The kwandhula ceremony as part of culture has not been spared from evolution as due to external influences. This book presents the kwandhula process and shows how it has changed over time. It takes readers through the process showing the main actors are during the kwandhula ceremony. The methodology is unstructured, qualitative and this is an insider's insight of what occurs during an introduction or marriage ceremony among the said societies. It is a narrative and interpretative discussion of this institution which has a lot of bearing on family and kinship life of the said societies. Sociologists, social anthropologists and other social scientists interested in the marriage institution in Africa should find the book useful.
Democratic rural organizations can play an important role in helping their members, who are frequently poor farmers living in the margins of the economy, to escape their disadvantaged starting point and to gain access to financial services, political influence and profitable markets for their product. Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia traces the evolution of democratic rural organizations from small groups to larger, NGO financed, multi-tier democratic rural organizations in recent years.Rural citizens have historically formed democratic organizations by their own initiative, to enhance economic and social wellbeing, but in recent years rural mobilization processes are frequently initiated and supported by national Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), who are financed and guided by international NGOs, a process which has had mixed results. Using rich empirical material from Uganda, India, Bangladesh and Cambodia, Democratic Rural Organizations: Thresholds for Evolution in Africa and Asia identifies eight thresholds which represent practical stages in the development pathway of democratic rural organizations and influence success or failure. Both development practitioners and researchers of development and rural policy will find this book a useful guide to the deployment of democratic organization as a strategy for economic and political empowerment.
