Finished in 1894, the LaPorte County Courthouse was constructed of Lake Superior red sandstone shipped by boat to the harbor in Michigan city and then to LaPorte by rail. It was designed by Brentwood Tolan in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, very popular at the time. I have always found this kind of sandstone to be one of the most beautiful building materials though it is probably not that long lasting.
