This resource is all you need for teaching students on cladistics and building phylogenetic trees. There is a document teaching how to create a phylogenetic tree. Before diving into the typical images with branches and nodes, it uses different colored beetles to explain the concept. Then, students are given images of flowers where they now have to create a phylogenetic tree based on the differences and similarities they see in the pictures. Once that foundation is set, students are given a real phylogenetic tree to analyze. This high school lesson plan includes teacher notes on morphology and phylogeny. They are scripted and foolproof! A student and teacher version of a handout is provided detailing what a phlylogenetic tree is and how to interpret it with images to follow along. Finally a phylogenetic homework assignment with SOLUTIONS is provided! This can be a tricky subject for those who have never been exposed to cladistics (phylogenetic trees). This resource making it easy and interactive! The Gene Pool: Definition of gene pool, allele frequency, calculating allele frequency. Several practice problems are included to show students how to calculate the allele frequency in a population. Phenotypes and Allele Frequencies: The importance of knowing allele frequencies in a population, genetic equilibrium, how to determine if evolution is occurring. The Hardy-Weinberg Principle: Definition, the five conditions of a Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, genetic equilibrium, why scientists use the Hardy-Weinberg Principle. Hardy-Weinberg Equation: The equation, what each part of the equation represents, practice problems using the Hardy-Weinberg equation. Disruptions to Genetic Equilibrium: Discussion of the five agents of change, mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, nonrandom mating, and natural selection. This bundle has everything you will need to teach a week-long unit on evolution and natural selection in your high school biology class or middle school science. It includes a power point with matching flashcards, a review game, and 9 different study guides. Vocabulary words in this unit include but are not limited to: evolution, evolve, natural selection, LaMarck, Darwin, chemical evolution, organic evolution, endosymbiosis, anaerobic prokaryote, homologous structures, analogous structures, vestigial structures, cladogram, overpopulation, competition, genetic variations, gene pool, speciation, geographic isolation, various behavioral adaptations, and physical adaptations. All of my units are designed to focus on key words, illustrations, and extra tips and tricks to help your at-risk students. But they are also filled with opportunities for your gifted students to make additional notes and illustrations. This bundle is perfect for... News teachers Classrooms with struggling learners who need the content simplified with plenty of visual aids and strategies to enhance student memory Homeschool programs looking for supplemental material Teachers with multiple preps who need to save on time Teachers with little to no budget looking for low-cost, engaging activities and lessons Experienced teachers who are new to biology or are looking to increase their test scores One to one classrooms Long term subs Suggestions on how to use this bundle: Flashcards and Power Point ~ I introduce a new unit every Monday with the flashcards and power point. Students cut out their flashcards and put them in order while I pull up the Power Point on the big screen. Using the Power Point as a lecture guide, students flip their flashcards over to write the answers on the back and take additional notes as I lecture. Students then use their flashcards to study with for homework the rest of the week and study with a partner each day in class for their bell work. Study Guides ~ I print all of the study guides for my students and pass them out on Tuesday and Wednesday. I also pull up a digital copy on the front board with the answer keys for students to follow along and copy while we discuss. Students are asked to add details and highlight key information. These study guides are designed to be visual and simple enough to "glance through" before test days, mid-terms, and finals. If you are a one to one school, these can also be added to their digital platform and copied individually. I prefer to discuss them together in class. My students are asked to have a three ring binder and 50 page protectors as part of their school supplies. I have them organize all of their study guides in their page protectors with an occasional "binder check" for the semester. (A three-ring whole punch will also do the trick!) Bug Splat Game - (You will need 4-6 fly swatters to play this game in a review station). I have "game day" every Thursday and use this day as an opportunity to review all new vocabulary words as well as old ones. Students rotate through 4 stations on "Game Day" in groups of 4-6 students. Repetition is the key to memory and if students continually see old vocabulary words from week to week, they are more likely to remember it on the final and/or state test. Other review game ideas can also be found in my product Game Day Review. If you enjoy this bundle, you can purchase all 13 bundles together and have biology content for the entire year HERE!
This is a unit review to give to students prior to the unit test. It has notes on every section of Evolution, questions students can answer and a Jeopardy game you can play as a class!
