In traditional UK horticultural media we tend to fixate only on ideas that are popular in the West. Even when we do look abroad, it’s almost always through the lens of the national stereotypes we are comfortable with. Red lacquer bridges and zen gardens, anyone? Thankfully, Instagram means we can now get a direct insight into how people around the world are growing plants on their own terms. I am fascinated by the Japanese love of creating mini water gardens both indoors and out, to the extent there are whole nurseries like this dedicated to the hobby.
