I’ll admit I was stunned to see Porter’s generic strategies headline on the very first assignment. Across twenty-plus years in consulting, I’ve always designed bespoke frameworks for each client’s situation rather than pulling Porter off the shelf. Yet walking through the exercise reminded me how quickly a well-worn model can snap thinking into place—even when you’re used to far more intricate structures. The takeaway: Proven frameworks give you solid scaffolding without trapping you—if you know how to bend and build on them.
