Squishy Thonet is a continuation of the Hi!breed family, sculpted from an an old broken Thonet bentwood chair. The series explores the personification of old chair frames with a sense of a life before. The character of the old chair is drawn and reimagined using plump upholstery, sculpted and hand stitched directly round the frame. There is an anthropomorphic happening during this process, an awakening of a life before. The chair frame, named Chair Nr.14, was pioneering in its lightweight design with a groundbreaking technique using hot steam to bend wood. It was an iconic design and was the first chair to go into mass manufacture in 1859. This is an edition of 10 including one artist proof. Squishy Thonet III.
