In 1985, the 10-beam Nova laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was able to produce 40 joules of ultraviolet energy in its 4.5 meter diameter target chamber. Nova included optical elements to convert infrared light to ultraviolet, and provided confidence that a much larger size laser, such as the National Igntion Facility could achieve thermonuclear ignition in a laboratory.
