A £5.5 million scheme has been set up to save wildcats from extinction in Scotland’s countryside. Wildcats will be bred in captivity and released into a large designated area of the Cairngorms National Park. The six-year effort to breed up to 60 animals will start in 2022. Experts have predicted that without intervention it is “highly likely” that the species, also known as the Highland tiger, will become extinct.
