In 1935 English publisher Allen Lane launched the Penguin imprint with André Maurois’ Ariel, and several other reprint titles, thus introducing the mass-market paperback. Procuring rights cheaply from hardcover publishers, Penguin was able to keep costs down with fairly large print runs of around 20,000 and was an immediate success, distributed in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
