As a young adult, I found myself daydreaming of places I wanted to visit that looked like a winter wonderland. I would save Instagram posts, Pinterest pins and print photos off and put it around my office and classroom. Breckenridge was one of those places that seemed like such a far off dream; something I could only hope to visit one day. Living in Colorado now, at 30, feels like a constant pinch me moment. Living less than 3 hours away from some of the places I grew up dreaming about never gets old. I’ve lived in Colorado for almost a year now and finally got around to driving up to Breckenridge from Colorado Springs. My mom was visiting while my husband is deployed and we decided to take a mini vacation with the kids and head up to Breckenridge for the night. It was the perfect amount of time to get away from home, while still keeping our sanity alone with 2 small children! Don’t be fooled though — our 24-hour visit was jam-packed with tons of fun stuff. Keep reading to see everything we did in the town of Breckenridge in 2 days. Getting to Breckenridge From our home in Colorado Springs, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive. We went up through Woodland Park, Divide, and Florissant, and continued through Lake George and Eleven Mile State Park. These towns/experiences have been on my list to visit so it was awesome to be able to see these beautiful places along the way. About 1 hour into the trip, the kids needed a break from riding through the mountains, so we pulled off at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and checked off a destination from my ever-growing Colorado list! It was a fascinating place, with petrified redwood stumps over 34 million years old. See more about our stop below. Hoosier Pass, along Highway 9, takes you from Colorado Springs to Breckenridge. It’s absolutely beautiful and is well kept throughout the winter and open year round. The high-elevation mountain pass is part of the Great Continental Divide in Colorado. Where to Stay Finding a hotel in Breckenridge on a budget isn’t the easiest thing to do. As a mom of 2 children, it’s important for me to find hotels that provide a few amenities that I consider important. These include: restaurant/store on site, shuttle into town (if the hotel is not in walking distance), crib/pack n play, and an elevator. A pool is always a plus. I found Beaver Run Resort to meet all of my expectations, and is budget friendly. It’s about 5 minutes from downtown and they have an awesome view of the surrounding mountains. Each condo is independently owned. We were in a beautiful 1-room apartment with a kitchen and living room. We stayed in building 4. The thing I loved most about this resort was that there were walkways from Building 4 to Building 3 (where the pool and sauna were) and to Building 1 (where the check in, lobby, stores and restaurants are). This was super helpful because we didn’t have to walk outside in the freezing temps. The hotel is stroller friendly with plenty of elevators along the way. Check out the indoor/outdoor pool for an incredible view from the hotel in the evening. Get take out dinner from Spenser’s at the hotel and watch your favorite TV show or football game in the comfort of your condo. You’ll also find a game room and other awesome amenities in the resort. Where to Eat Columbine Cafe had an incredible breakfast. It’s a small, kid-friendly cafe off main street. They get busy in the mornings so get their early. There’s convenient parking in the back of the cafe also. Try the breakfast burrito. YUM! For lunch, head downstairs to Downstairs at Eric’s where they have a very diverse American menu. Their pizza was delicious and when the kids are tired of sitting down, head over to the arcade to play some fun games. Exploring Downtown Breckenridge Stroll main street and check out all the shops. Breckenridge is known for its small business shops and restaurants. They pride themselves on having none of the big name food chains. Visit the world’s highest winery at Continental Divide Winery (elevation 10,361 feet). I highly recommend the red wine flight. Also, if you buy 2 bottles, they waive the wine tasting. Cabernet franc was amazing and I got a few bottles to take home, for when Stephen returns! Walk off the wine flight with a stroll by the river to see the beautiful pine trees (they might be covered in Snow if you visit in the fall/winter months). Playground & Visiting the famous Breckenridge Troll The High Line Railroad Park is a great place to get the wiggles out for little ones. You can see a historic train and rotary snow plow right beside a train themed playground. Right across the parking lot by the Indoor Ice Arena is the entrance to the famous Breckenridge troll. The troll, named Isak Heartstone, is a 15-foot tall wooden troll sculpture located on the Trollstigen Trail. Get there early to beat the crowds because it is Breckenridge’s most popular outdoor art exhibit. Many of the hotel/city shuttles will bring you here on their route. Beaver Run Resort has a shuttle you can take here as well, especially during the summer when the parking lot will fill up fast. Other 2-Day Itinerary Breckenridge Tips To park downtown, you can pay by card or use the Passport Parking app. It saves so much time because you can extend time right in the app if you’re not near your car. Be sure to save and share this post for your future trip planning! If you only have a limited time to visit Breckenridge, this is the perfect 2-day itinerary to see the best spots and eat great food. And if you need someone to help you put this itinerary into action and book your trip for you, your favorite travel agent is happy to help (aka me!)!
