More than 2500 acres were chosen as the site for the Hutchinson Naval Air Station in 1942, according to “Survey Report of World War II Air Bases in Kansas” by Susan Ford. Construction for the base began in October 1942. An additional 3,900 acres were leased for up to 20 auxiliary landing fields. Hutchinson was constructed to provide primary training for the Naval Air Reserve. Until the station was completed, the Navy made temporary use of the town's municipal airport (located east of the town). The old airbase is now used as a private Glider Airport called the "Sunflower Gliderport" as well as Law Enforcement Training. Night full moon.
