On Aztec Peak, above the falls and near the gentle headwaters of Workman Creek, on forest road 487 of the Tonto National Forest, there is a forest trail named "Abbey's Way", TR151, in honor of the great writer Edward Abbey, who spent 3 summers stationed on the peak of the mountain in a historic fire lookout tower. Perhaps only a quarter-mile from the trail-head start, the forest trail opens up into a series of very large meadows of tall grasses mixed with fern. The large meadows lead up to remnants of an semi-ancient apple orchard tucked away in the forest, which still occasionally yield great amounts of apples during certain years. This area was used in old ranching days, but since reclaimed by the National Forest. Pictured here is an old scrub oak at the end of this color, surrounded by the late-season colors of the remaining ferns and grasses.
