Kennedyera.icons - When Clint Hill was told he'd be guarding Jacqueline Kennedy after the 1960 election, he was disappointed. He wanted to protect the President-elect, not the President-elect's wife. By his own account, it became the most important assignment of his life. 🇺🇸 Hill told the story himself decades later, in his 2012 memoir Mrs. Kennedy and Me, written with Lisa McCubbin. He was a young agent who expected fast-moving political work. Instead he found himself following a 31-year-old new mother to fox hunts, beaches, shops, and quiet afternoons that no one else in government would ever see. He described a woman very different from her public image: funny, athletic, impatient with fuss, and fiercely protective of her children. He also saw the things she kept out of photographs, including her cigarettes, which she was careful never to be pictured with. Over time the relationship became one of deep mutual trust. He traveled with her to Europe and Asia, stood near her at state events, and was part of her everyday routine at Hyannis Port and in Virginia. He was also in the motorcade in Dallas. What he did there made him famous, but he spent decades unable to talk about it. Hill stayed with the family into 1964, then moved on in the Secret Service. He never stopped calling her Mrs. Kennedy.
