Dal momento che alcuni dei progetti su cui volevo pubblicare un post sono ancora in lavorazione, ho deciso nel frattempo di scrivere un piccolo post su un argomento che mi sta molto a cuore e che dovrebbe essere interessante anche per gli altri appassionati del XIV secolo: asole e bottoni. Mi capita a volte di vedere vestiti ben fatti, completati però da bottoni mal collocati o da asole di una forma non documentata: ho pensato dunque che potesse essere di qualche utilità fare brevemente il punto sulla questione. I’m still working on the projects I want to blog about, meanwhile I decided to write a post about a topic I’m really interested in and that should be interesting also for other 14th century maniacs: buttons and buttonholes. Sometimes I see well-made dresses, completed with misplaced buttons or with non-period buttonholes: that’s a pity, and that’s why I thought it may be usefult to talk a bit about it. Materiali: È attestata una grande varietà di questi piccoli accessori tanto amati nel XIV secolo: dai reperti della Groenlandia e degli scavi di Londra sono emersi numerosi bottoni di stoffa, di dimensioni che spaziano dai 9 mm di diametro ai 35 mm. È interessante rilevare che, nei casi in cui sono stati ritrovati ancora attaccati ai vestiti dei quali facevano parte, sono fatti dello stesso tessuto. Da questi ritrovamenti emerge che i bottoni erano realizzati semplicemente ripiegando la stoffa su se stessa, ma da altri reperti, quali ad esempio il farsetto di Charles de Blois e (presumibilmente) il farsetto di Pandolfo III Malatesta, risulta che in alcuni casi potevano essere utilizzati anche dei supporti -in legno- attorno ai quali avvolgere la stoffa. Naturalmente, sono molti anche i reperti di bottoni di metallo: di leghe di rame, d'argento, con pietre incastonate. Farsetto di Pandolfo III Malatesta, morto nel 1427. Materials. It can be found a great variety of these small accessories: from Greenland findings and London findings emerged many cloth buttons, both very small (9mm diameter) and quite big (35 mm). When they have been found still attached to the dress they belonged, it’s possible to see they were made of the same fabric. This kind of button was made by manipulating small pieces of cloth, but from some extant garments, like Charles de Blois pourpoint or (eventually) Pandolfo Malatesta’s doublet we know that they could have had also a wooden core. Of course we have a lot of metal button findings of different shapes ad dimensions, made in copper alloy, silver, gold, with precious stones. Posizione. Tanto i reperti quanto la documentazione iconografica mostrano chiaramente che i bottoni sono sempre cuciti sull'orlo della stoffa, non a 0.5/1cm dal margine come solitamente si vede nei vestiti moderni. Agata), Esempio di "asole volanti": si noti che i bottoni-gioiello non sembrano essere cuciti al tessuto, ma sembra che il loro anellino passi attraverso una piccola asola nella stoffa e che siano tutti tenuti fermi da un cordino passante all'interno. Di solito i bottoni sono cuciti direttamente alla stoffa, ma sembra che quelli di metallo potessero a volte essere attaccati in altro modo, ovvero facendo passare il loro anellino attraverso una piccola asola rotonda nella stoffa e tenendoli tutti tenuti fermi con un cordino passante all'interno. Questo sistema, forse documentato anche da alcune asole analizzate nei reperti di Londra - piccole e circolari, come quelle utilizzate per farvi passare i laccetti, ma prive di segni di trazione e di tracce di altre fibre che si sarebbero dovute depositare a causa dello sfregamento dei cordini- sarebbe molto utile per permettere di spostare velocemente bottoni particolarmente pregiati da un capo all'altro, a seconda delle necessità. La S. Margherita di Pietro Lorenzetti potrebbe mostrare proprio un’allacciatura di questo tipo. Per determinare quanti utilizzarne e di che materiale, sarà necessario valutare caso per caso la tipologia di abito e la destinazione d'uso. Placing the buttons. Findings and iconographical sources clearly show that buttons are always sewn on the edge of the fabric, not 0.5/1 cm from the edge like in modern clothes. The buttons are usually sewn directly on the garment, but it seems that metal ones could sometimes attached in another way, i.e. putting their loop through an eyelet and holding them in place with a lace passing through. This peculiar way of attaching buttons may be confirmed by some eyelets from London findings - small, rounded, like the ones used for spiral lacing, but without any tension marks or traces of fibres left by the cord itself - and would be very useful to quickly and easily move precious buttons from a garment to another. The S. Margaret by Pietro Lorenzetti may show this kind of button-placing. To decide how many buttons sew and of wich material, it's important to analyze case by case and consider the kind of the dress you want to reconstruct. Le asole / Buttonholes Materiali. Le asole possono presentarsi come semplici tagli nella stoffa (reperti della Groenlandia) o, più spesso, sono rifinite con il "punto asola" in seta, di solito dello stesso colore del tessuto (reperti di Londra, farsetto di Pandolfo Malatesta).Alcune asole dei reperti di Londra presentano tracce di finitura non più esistente, si ipotizza pertanto potessero essere state fatte in filo di lino. Materials. Buttonholes can be simple cuttings in the cloth (Greenland findings) or, more often, are finished with a raw of buttonhole stitch in silk, usually the same colour as the fabric (London findings, Pandolfo Malatesta’s doublet). Some findings from London show traces of finishing stitches that didn’t survive, so they may have been worked in linen thread. Asole del farsetto di Pandolfo Malatesta. Forma: La maggior parte delle asole medievali presenta la finitura di seta solo sui lati lunghi, ma non negli angoli, e possono pertanto essere definite "box shaped", rettangolari. Anche se solo alcune iconografie ce le mostrano e non si sono conservate nei reperti, si ipotizza che strisce di tessuto di lino applicate sul rovescio dell'abito rendessero le asole più robuste. Shape. Most of medieval buttonholes show silk finishing only on the upper and lower side and not in the corners, so they have been called “box shaped”. Even if only some frescoes show them and they haven’t been preserved in any finding, probably linen stripes were sewn inside the garment where the buttonholes were cut in order to make it stronger. A volte si vedono nelle ricostruzioni moderne lunghe file delle cosiddette "asole volanti" (magari realizzate di tessuto o di sottili cordini e fatte, forse, per velocizzare il lavoro e di poterlo svolgere con una normale macchina da cucire): l'unica attestazione di asole di questo tipo nella quale io mi sia mai imbattuta è Santa Margherita (o S. Agata, realizzata intorno al 1330) di Pietro Lorenzetti, in cui però le asole volanti mi sembrano strettamente funzionali ai particolari bottoni-gioiello (come si vede da questa immagine in altissima qualità). L'utilizzo di asole volanti di stoffa per in presenza di normali bottoni ritengo dunque non sia fondato su evidenze documentarie, dato che tutti i reperti a me noti e la quasi totalità dell'iconografia che ho visto sembra indicare che il tipo più comune di asola fosse quella tagliata nella stoffa. Bottone non collocato sul bordo e asola volante: questo stile non mi risulta che sia documentato. Misplaced button and cloth buttonhole: I don't think this style is attested.. Sometimes I’ve seen in modern reproductions of medieval garments long rows of “buttonholes” made with thin bands of fabric or cord: I think people choose them to make them in a quick way, maybe using the sewing machine. I don’t think it’s the correct way to make buttonholes, because I’ve only seen them once in period sources, in Santa Margherita (or S. Agata, paintend around 1330) by Pietro Lorenzetti, and I think this peculiar shape is due to the precious and big jewel-buttons (you can see them better in this high-quality picture). So I wouldn’t recommend the use of this kind of buttonhole, because all the findings and iconographical sources I’ve seen seem to confirm the most common buttonhole was the one cut in the fabric. - Tutorial per le asole: La Cotte Simple - Tutorial for buttonholes: La Cotte Simple.
