This week I had the rare privelege of visiting the habitat of Florida's legendary "Ghost Orchid", Dendrophylax lindenii. You may know of this orchid from Susan Orleans' book, The Orchid Thief. The movie Adaptation, which starred Meryl Streep and Nicholas Cage. was based on the book. Dendrophylax lindenii. is a rare leafless orchid that grows in the swamps of Southwest Florida. You have to wade through waist-deep water to get to it. It has been artificially propagated and some have succeeded growing it. As you might imagine, it requires constant warm temperatures and humidity near 100%. The flowers are borne on a long inflorescence and bob in the air like some sort of magical frog. Pollinated by a night-flying sphinx moth. I invite you to view the preceeding four photos.
